Cable Internet, phone and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their results to the end of Q3 2015, which reveals that they added +55,500 (net) UK broadband customers in the quarter to make for a total of 4,625,800 (43% take their 100Mbps+ services).

At the end of last week TalkTalk informed their broadband and phone customers that “less than” 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers had been compromised by the cyber-attack on their website (here), but today this has been sharply revised down to the figure of 156,959.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for DEFRA and Conservative MP for Penrith and The Borders (Cumbria), Rory Stewart, has spoken of his concern for the “unjust situation” where people in rural areas can be forced to pay more for a slower broadband ISP package than their urban counterparts.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has today officially begun the roll-out of their new 1000Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to parts of remote rural West Berkshire in England, which should benefit around 12,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

Telecoms operator EE Mobile has launched a special Christmas promotion for their new Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers, which will give subscribers 500MB (MegaBytes) of free data every month for a year. On top of that they’ve included a £10 Google Play voucher.

Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the United Kingdom, has today confirmed that they’ve started the roll-out of a new cable broadband router (SuperHub 3), which can also act as a VoIP based telephone gateway, to their European and UK operators.

Internet provider Quickline has confirmed the installation of a new fixed wireless network mast in the small rural Lincolnshire (England) village of Upton (West Lindsey), which should deliver superfast broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps to the surrounding area.

Gigaclear has already started the build of their new 1000Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Gloucestershire (England) and they’ve now published the full roll-out schedule for that deployment, which should benefit 6,495 premises by the end of May 2017.

The Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire scheme in England has revealed a more detailed roll-out plan for their second state aid supported “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) contract with BTOpenreach, which will extend the service to another 17,000 premises by Spring 2018 (98% coverage).

BT has once again tweaked their national telecoms network in order to significantly reduce the time that a phone call connection can be held open (active) after the called party puts their handset down (i.e. such as when you end a voice call), which could make life more difficult for fraudsters.

UK ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) reports that some of their broadband-only customers are still being charged around 30-40p for phantom calls to 123 (Speaking Clock) and that’s despite the use of Outgoing Call Barring (OCB). The finger of blame is once again being pointed at BTOpenreach’s contractors.
