Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has announced that the next area to benefit from their £3bn “Project Lightning” network expansion will be the city of Nottingham (England), which will see an additional 50,000 homes and businesses gain access to ultrafast broadband.

An independent study of broadband Internet connectivity in Wales has claimed that 80% of premises in the country should now have access to a superfast connection (30Mbps+), which rises to 81.3% when you use the Government’s definition of 24Mbps+. But rural areas still have a long way to go.

Internet provider BT Business has today launched a new offer on their standard UK unlimited broadband (up to 17Mbps ADSL2+) packages, which means that new customers will benefit from being able to take the first 6 months of service for free (available to order until 18th December 2015).

The latest survey of 910 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that a little over half of respondents (55.1%) get their Internet connection hardware (router) included as part of a broadband ISP bundle and over a third (38.4%) say that the quality of this kit is “very important” to their choice of provider.

A new survey of 3,000 Brits commissioned by Hyperoptic, which is deploying “hyperfast” (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband services around a number of UK cities, has claimed that people would spend 8% (+£14,000) more on a new home if it came with a 100Mbps+ connection.

Mobile operators Three UK and Vodafone have each secured a 20MHz slice of the 1.4GHz radio spectrum band (L-Band 1452-1492MHz) from Qualcomm, which the operators say could be used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband speeds that are “up to three times faster” than today’s.

A new survey of 1,141 small and medium sized business bosses, which was conducted by the Daisy Group, has found that a staggering 92% have virtually no understanding of data centres, while 75% have no clue about VoIP and 44% are puzzled by “fibre broadband” (ISPs sometimes get that one wrong too).

As expected BT has confirmed that their first large-scale (2,000 premises) live customer trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer Internet speeds of up to 330Mbps (rising to 500Mbps in the future), have begun in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire).
