UPDATE A Quick Update on BT’s G.fast and FOD2 Ultrafast Broadband Trial

At the end of last month BTOpenreach began connecting customers to their large-scale 6-9 month trial of 500Mbps capable NGA2 G.fast broadband technology and 1Gbps Fibre-on-Demand (FOD2) in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire). Now we have the first official progress update.

Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that their Gigabit (1000Mbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now being deployed to the city of Glasgow in Scotland, with the first homes to benefit existing inside the ‘Glasgow Harbour’ urban regeneration area.

TalkTalk Cuts Unlimited Superfast Fibre Broadband to GBP5 Per Month

Budget ISP TalkTalk has reduced the cost of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps (2Mbps upload) capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service to just £5 a month for the first 6 months of service and then £10 per month for 12 months (£15 thereafter). A free connection and £50 Love2shop voucher are also included.

Government to Start Rural Pilot of Free Broadband Satellite Subsidy

As expected the Government has announced that they’re launching a pilot of their proposed subsidy (voucher) scheme to support the installation of “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable Satellite broadband services in remote rural areas, which will begin this month in Suffolk and West Yorkshire (England).

London-based analyst firm Ovum has published a new report (Global Broadband Experience Scorecard 2015), which among other things concludes that for typical usage broadband ISPs must be able to deliver a minimum of 10Mbps (Megabits per second); rising to 50Mbps for users of Ultra HD (4K) video.

Mobile operator EE has announced that it is “accelerating” the roll-out of their new 4G+ (LTE-Advanced Category 6) based Mobile Broadband tech around London, which can in some areas deliver peak download speeds of 146Mbps; although average speeds will be a fair bit lower.
