The latest update from Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks has today revealed that they’ve completed the work to bring 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to the entire Elizabeth Line, including tunnelled sections in between stations, which can be harnessed by mobile operators including EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2.

Mobile network operator Three UK has this week begun issuing text messages to customers on Apple’s iPhone devices, which confirms that they will officially introduce support for Rich Communications Services (RCS) with the release of the next iOS 18.2 update – due on 9th December 2024.

The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has highlighted new data from Point Topic’s UK broadband affordability tracker as helping to show that the “cost-of-living crisis isn’t getting any easier“, with a digital divide still existing that is allegedly “forcing millions to choose between broadband and food.”

Broadband network operator Netomnia (inc. Brsk and YouFibre) has today announced that they’ve signed a deal to expand their 10Gbps full fibre network into properties managed and owned by Peabody (inc. subsidiaries). This is a not-for-profit housing association that serves thousands of residents across their housing stock in Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Kent (England).

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve signed a new partnership with eSIM Go, which will allow the latter to offer connectivity on Vodafone’s network in the UK to their business customers and thus remove MVNO (virtual operator) barriers to entry for organisations of all sizes.

Hampshire-based network builder and ISP toob, which has deployed a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of South England, have today announced that they’ve expanded the availability of their services – under a strategic partnership with CityFibre – to include Lincoln, Loughborough, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Peterborough and Derby.

London-based alternative broadband ISP Pulse Fibre, which over the next few years aspires to complete over 250,000 unique UK “full fibre” (FTTP) connections into new build homes and MDUs (here), has today announced that holders of the Blue Light Card (i.e. price cuts for workers in the emergency services and veterans) will be able to get a special discount.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which runs the popular broadband ISP performance testing service Speedtest.net and the real-time outage monitoring Downdetector site, has used data gathered from the latter to reveal which online services suffered the largest outages during 2024 – Facebook’s outage on 5th March tops the table.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G based mobile services across “over” 600 postcodes in the port city of Aberdeen (Scotland), which should mean “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has come top in umlaut and Connect’s latest annual 2024 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G performance across 19 cities, 27 towns and along 10,480km of major roads. On the flip side, O2 (Virgin Media) once again found themselves at the bottom.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today introduced changes that are designed to improve their spectrum sharing framework, which among other things have been designed to add more flexibility, facilitate more effective spectrum sharing and increase spectrum supply to support new types of fixed wireless (broadband) and mobile (4G, 5G etc.) services.

The Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) today claims to have become the “first local authority in Wales” to complete a digital switchover of its telecare alarms. This has seen them move away from BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR) to adopt internet-based solutions instead.

The UK Government has signed a new £1.29bn deal with BT (EE) to extend their operation of the 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN) for another 7-years. But after years of delays and disputes, only some of which is related to EE’s side of things, the Home Office still doesn’t expect the ESN to be fully operational until 2029.
