SSE Enterprise Telecoms Sets Out its 2018 Predictions for UK Networks

The enterprise division of SSE Enterprise Telecoms has today set out its list of predictions for the major trends that could affect UK telecoms in 2018, which focuses on the rise of alternative network providers, greater access to fibre optic cables, more preparation for future 5G Mobile and so forth.

Ofcom Press Forward UK Auction of 4G and 5G Mobile Spectrum

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has said that they will publish the auction regulations for the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum award process on Wednesday 24th January, which is despite the fact that Three UK are continuing to disrupt the process via litigation.

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will tomorrow at 9am begin a new ‘Call for Evidence’ on proposals that could help to make WiFi and Mobile (5G) broadband speeds of 1Gbps available onboard all UK mainline train routes by 2025.

First Part of Future Ultrafast 5G Mobile Standard Completed by 3GPP

Yesterday evening the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) declared completion of the first real specification for the future 5G Mobile standard (5G New Radio Non-Standalone) at a meeting in Lisbon (Portugal), which occurred sooner than the originally expected early 2018 date.

Ofcom’s planned auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands might soon proceed after the High Court rejected an appeal by Three UK, which had demanded that the regulator impose a 30% spectrum cap in order to stop EE (BT) from bidding.

Vodafone and Ericsson Conduct UK 5G Mobile Field Trial at 3.5GHz

Mobile operator Vodafone and Ericsson today claim to have become the “first” in the United Kingdom to conduct a live pre-standard test of future 5G Mobile technology, which was run both indoors and outdoors in central London using the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

UK Government Updates on 5G Mobile Rollout Strategy and Trials

The Government has today issued an update on the progress of their 5G strategy, which aims to help foster the UK roll-out of next generation ultrafast Mobile Broadband technology. Ofcom UK Moots High Frequency Spectrum for Fixed Wireless Broadband

Ofcom has today proposed changes that could result in faster fixed wireless data and broadband links, such as exploring the potential for radio spectrum above 92GHz, changing the authorisation regime in the 64-66GHz band to licence exempt and expanding the use cases for 57-66 GHz (V band).

EE Delivers 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds of 2.8Gbps in First Network Test

Mobile operator EE (BT) and Huawei have conducted their first UK lab test of an end-to-end 5G network, which delivered a consistent download speed of 2.8Gbps (Gigabits per second) using an active antenna unit with 64×64 MIMO broadcasting via the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

Arqiva to Stick WiFi and 4G Cells on Lampposts in London’s Waltham Forest

CBNL Survey and TalkTalk CEO Say UK Business Broadband is Poor

A new survey of 200 UK businesses, which was commissioned by Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL), has found that 47% are not receiving the broadband speeds promised by their ISP, while 35% have been negatively impacted by slow speeds and 34% suffered significant periods of network downtime.

Ofcom has today started their formal process for making the 3.6GHz to 3.8GHz radio spectrum band available for use by future 5G based Mobile and Mobile Broadband technologies in the United Kingdom, although Mobile Network Operators (MNO) won’t be able to use it nationwide until 2022.
