The enterprise division of SSE Enterprise Telecoms has today set out its list of predictions for the major trends that could affect UK telecoms in 2018, which focuses on the rise of alternative network providers, greater access to fibre optic cables, more preparation for future 5G Mobile and so forth.

Yesterday evening the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) declared completion of the first real specification for the future 5G Mobile standard (5G New Radio Non-Standalone) at a meeting in Lisbon (Portugal), which occurred sooner than the originally expected early 2018 date.

Ofcom’s planned auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands might soon proceed after the High Court rejected an appeal by Three UK, which had demanded that the regulator impose a 30% spectrum cap in order to stop EE (BT) from bidding.

Mobile operator Vodafone and Ericsson today claim to have become the “first” in the United Kingdom to conduct a live pre-standard test of future 5G Mobile technology, which was run both indoors and outdoors in central London using the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

A new survey of 200 UK businesses, which was commissioned by Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL), has found that 47% are not receiving the broadband speeds promised by their ISP, while 35% have been negatively impacted by slow speeds and 34% suffered significant periods of network downtime.
