The new UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, yesterday entered 10 Downing Street – after replacing Boris Johnson in the post – by acknowledging that “we need to build roads, homes and broadband faster” than they have been doing so far. But it remains to be seen whether that statement is more than just a sound bite.

The Building Digital UK team have published another batch of Public Reviews (PR) for the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout – this time covering Herefordshire, Lincolnshire (inc. north-east Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire) and East Riding, Cheshire and Gloucestershire in England.

The Cheshire East Council has announced that the wider Connecting Cheshire Partnership have committed £2.9m to boost the value of the UK Government’s local Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers vouchers to help rural homes and businesses install gigabit-capable internet connections.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which is busy building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland and Northern England, has today announced that their network build has started in a second town in Cumbria – Kendal (this follows their initial build in Penrith).

The state-aid backed Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project has announced that Openreach (BT) have officially completed their fibre-based (FTTC and FTTP) deployment contract under the scheme, which has so far enabled more than 190,000 extra premises to access faster broadband speeds since 2021 (take-up is at 80%).

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) programme has today published the latest quarterly Summer 2022 update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which reveals that they’ve launched new procurements in Hampshire and Shropshire, but are struggling in Staffordshire and Hertfordshire.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced that the first subsidy contract under their new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband scheme has today been signed with ISP Wessex Internet, which is a smaller local supplier deal that will aim to reach 7,100 premises in rural parts of North Dorset (England).

The UK Government (DCMS) has today published their response to a number of recommendations made by last year’s National Infrastructure Commission‘s (NIC) report into Infrastructure, Towns and Regeneration (here), which called for better mobile coverage data, a clearer gigabit broadband plan and more effort to boost take-up.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) for their Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy (GIS) programme, which is valued at £800m+ and reflects the part of their £5bn Project Gigabit scheme that aims to help gap-fund the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks into rural areas.

The Scottish Government has unveiled an extension of their existing £600m Reaching 100% (R100) contract with BT (Openreach), which will see a further £36m being invested to cover an additional 2,637 rural properties with a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. But completion is now 2028!

A small group of MPs have given their backing to a new Private Members Bill (PMB), which would make it mandatory for UK operators building full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to initiate a local consultation when deploying new telecommunications infrastructure in residential areas (e.g. telecoms poles).

The European Commission recently published their annual 2022 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which charts how the EU’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries. The UK was removed from this report post-Brexit, but it’s still possible to see how we compare by using Ofcom’s data.

The £23.8m deployment by Virgin Media Business (VMO2) of a new 2,700km long “full fibre” network in Greater Manchester, which is designed to connect over 1,500 public sector sites, has also resulted in 17 public sites – including homeless shelters, charities and community centres – benefiting from free fibre broadband until 2025.

The parents of Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and O2 (Telefonica), supported by InfraVia Capital Partners, have today announced the creation of a new Joint Venture (JV) to build an XGS-PON based and wholesale focused Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network that will cover “up to” 7 million additional UK homes.

The BT Group has published their Q1 2022/23 results to June 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 7.957 million premises (up by a record of 763K in the quarter vs 752K last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G network now reaches 55% of the UK population.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has been hit by yet another controversy after it “terminated” two contracts with Bath-based broadband ISP Truespeed, which had suffered delays in its £6.7m (public investment) deal to deploy a full fibre network to cover 15,172 premises.
