The CEO of UK ISP 4th Utility, Tony Hughes, has today said that access to reliable broadband should be a basic human right and that now is the time for the Government to “rethink” their investment in the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project. Instead, Tony believes that such funding should be diverted to upgrade broadband infrastructure.

The Government’s Digital Secretary, Nadine Dorries MP, has appointed Simon Blagden CBE to be the new chair of their Building Digital UK (BDUK) executive agency, which has responsibility for delivering faster broadband and mobile networks across the nation (e.g. the £5bn Project Gigabit scheme and the £1bn Shared Rural Network).

The Welsh Government has issued an easy to miss statement on Digital Connectivity in Wales, which among other things reveals that their £52.5m Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout contract with Openreach (BT) is now expected to cover slightly more premises. But this will push completion back to 31st March 2023.

UK ISP FACTCO has today finished its rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the rural village of Cambois, which they claim is the “largest completed [gigabit voucher] project to date” in Northumberland (England).

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has been allocated £16.89 million over three years – April 2022 to March 2025 – from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), which they say will be spent on everything from “a lack of broadband coverage to poor rural transport links“.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project and UK ISP Airband have today issued a new July 2022 update on their Phase 2 contract to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the region, which has so far covered 2,500 premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H1 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have boosted their reach to 37.61% of premises (up from 30.23% in H2 2021) and 69.24% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 65.22%). But the results vary around England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has today issued another update on the full fibre rollout progress of their £6m Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract with Openreach (BT), which was originally due to complete by the end of 2021 but is still ongoing.

Broadband ISP WightFibre, which is busy building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover around 78,000 premises on the Isle of Wight by the end of 2023 (South Coast of Hampshire, England), has announced that they’ve just hit the 40,000 premises passed milestone (up from 35k in Feb 2022).

The Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Kate Forbes, has issued a brief progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with BT (Openreach), which is busy extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage – the vast majority of which is coming via FTTP – across rural parts of the country.

The Government has tonight announced that a joint £82m investment by the Departments for Culture (DCMS) and Education (DfE) will mean that, over the next 3 years, as many as 3,000 primary schools across rural England will now get access to broadband (full fibre) speeds of up to 1000Mbps.

Belfast-based ISP Fibrus, which until now has been focused on building gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland, has this afternoon revealed its £200m expansion plan for Great Britain – aiming to reach 113,000 premises by 2025 (starting in Cumbria).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has announced that their existing full fibre broadband rollout contract with rural UK ISP Wessex Internet is to be extended, which will see a further 1,110 homes and businesses in South Somerset gaining access to their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The Welsh Government has just shared a Q1 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 29,959 extra premises (up from 25,855 in Q4 2021) have now gained access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

A recent study by researchers at Lancaster University has found that 28% of the population in rural North West England are not confident in completing key tasks online (e.g. applying for jobs) and 19% found either their PC, broadband, smartphone or mobile data unaffordable – rising to 36% among households with an income of under £20k.

The village of Northleigh in East Devon (England) now stands a good chance of being completely covered by a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after UK ISP Airband, which held a state aid supported contract to build in the area, de-scoped the community from its wider plans.
