The BT Group has released their latest quarterly report (Q1 2017 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,276,000 subscribers (up by 29K vs 83K in Q4 2016) and Openreach has begun a consultation on the “potential benefits and costs of a large-scale FTTP deployment.“

A new Proof of Concept trial in Kent (England) is about to begin that could allow Openreach’s (BT) new ultrafast G.fast technology to share the same spectrum as existing FTTC (VDSL2) “fibre broadband” services, which in the future might help to boost speeds beyond 330Mbps.

California-based ASSIA, which supplies broadband management systems to ISPs, has today announce that “extreme high frequency sub-millimeter waves” could in the future be used to push broadband speeds of up to 1Tbps (Terabit per second) down a single 100 metre twisted-pair copper line.

Openreach (BT) has informed participating ISPs that they’re “not planning further trials” of their 18Mbps (2Mbps upload) FTTC / VDSL2 “fibre broadband” product with new customers, although it will remain open to existing subscribers.. for now.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that over the past few weeks the cost estimates given out for their co-funded Community Fibre Partnerships, which work with local groups in order to deliver faster FTTC or FTTP broadband into poorly served areas, have been reduced.

UK Internet provider TalkTalk Business has today confirmed that they will be one of the first ISPs to adopt Openreach’s (BT) proposed ‘Dark Fibre Access‘ product, which follows a key ruling by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that will affect how the service is priced.
