The first contract for the Superfast Northamptonshire project in England, which aimed to make BTOpenreach’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network available to about 90% of premises by the end of 2015, has officially completed.

BTOpenreach has today formally confirmed that the ‘Basic Engineer’ and also ‘Managed Engineer’ Installation options for their ‘up to’ 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband lines, specifically those installs that included a simple VDSL Modem (pictured), will be withdrawn from 31st March 2016.

The national UK telecoms regulator has ruled that they have “reasonable grounds” for believing that BT contravened 13A.8 and 8A.8 of their Significant Market Power (SMP) conditions, which means that the operator has not provided all of the information that it is required to supply.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has called on the European Commission to help stop any future allocations of state aid going towards BTOpenreach’s “fibre broadband” network expansion, which they fear would create an “unacceptable risk of overbuild of existing networks.”
