Telecoms giant BT migrated 300,000 UK business customers away from legacy phone lines and on to digital broadband and phone solutions in 2024. But the provider claims that 22% of small businesses still see themselves as “analogue“, relying on tools like traditional landlines, paper contracts and fax machines, which must change before the old service is switched-off.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they will kick off their project to close around 4,600 of their legacy exchanges from 1st April 2025, starting with the introduction of a “stop sell” on new service provisions for an initial batch of 105 sites (due to complete by around 2030/31). This will impact various broadband, PIA and Ethernet services from ISPs.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just revealed how much they’ll charge ISPs for their new symmetric 1Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband package, which is due to launch on 1st April 2025 and will initially only be available to locations being covered as part of their rural Project Gigabit contracts (here).

The UK government has today set out its plan for increasing digital skills to help “deliver growth and opportunity for all“, which among other things includes various pledges from key ISPs and mobile operators (e.g. BT, CityFibre, Vodafone etc.) to help support the initiative and break down the digital divide that still exists for many people.

Network technology firm Adtran has revealed that their Software-Defined (SD), open and disaggregated SDX Optical Line Terminal (OLT) platform now powers 8.6 million UK premises passed on Openreach’s (BT) new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, managed by Mosaic CP. This is said to reflect about 30% of their national full fibre network.

Broadband, phone and Ethernet services in the Cambridgeshire (England) town of St Neots have been disrupted after criminals ripped up and stole around 500 metres worth of Openreach’s (BT) copper telecoms cable, which has impacted four of their fibre street cabinets in the area – serving premises with around 380 customers.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today confirmed to ISPreview that customers of their fixed line consumer broadband packages, which are supplied over Openreach and CityFibre’s national networks (FTTC and FTTP), should still be able to request a Static IP (Internet Protocol) address. But this is despite some support staff telling users the opposite.

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT have today confirmed that they will recruit more than 600 additional apprentices and graduates in 2025 (up from 500 in 2024) – forming part of their September 2025 intake. The roles will span across areas such as cybersecurity, software engineering and customer service.

Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly have this week criticised UK broadband and mobile operators, particularly Vodafone, BT, EE, Sky Broadband, Vodafone, O2 and Fibrus, for their response to the damage caused by Storm Éowyn. The complaints touched on issues of slow repairs, absent compensation and poor communication with customers.

The Scottish Government has launched a new evaluation survey that calls for feedback from those who have benefitted from their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT). This is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas and has now built to a total of 70,000 premises or 75,000 if you include vouchers.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today published their Q3 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a new record to total 1.549 million customers (up by 72k in Q3 vs 50k in Q2). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.3m (down by -174k vs -93k in Q2), due entirely to a fall in their prepaid/PAYG base.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that Storm Éowyn (pronounced ‘Ay-oh-win’), which violently struck the United Kingdom at the end of last week on Friday 24th January 2025 (here and here), has so far left more than 500 broadband / telecoms poles “badly damaged“, with reports continuing to come in.

Telecoms giant BT Group has today published a brief trading update to the end of 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises in the last quarter (unchanged) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (total 17m) and saw related take-up rise by 472k (net adds) to total 6m (stable at 35%). But total broadband lines fell by 208k as rivals continue to bite.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has today appointed Neos Networks to lead their £1.2m D2N2 Gigahubs project, which will work alongside Openreach (BT) and Netomnia to deploy a new full fibre gigabit broadband network to connect “up to” 28 public buildings (schools, NHS sites etc.) across rural parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Internet service provider iTalk, which is powered by Openreach’s national network, has today announced the arrival of their brand-new “Full Fibre” (FTTP) home broadband packages to complement their existing range of ADSL and FTTC (VDSL2) based packages on older lines. The new tiers are being launched alongside some big price discounts.

ISPreview has spotted that the Scottish Government (SG) yesterday published a contract notice for the Fife, Perth and Kinross (Lot 4 – Scotland) area under the UK’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme, which is expected to expand full fibre (FTTP) connectivity to an estimated 28,441 premises in hard-to-reach (rural) locations.
