Network access provider Openreach has notified UK broadband ISPs about a new Complex to Fibre (C2F) trial, which could result in some copper-line based customers being given a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in situations where it’s available and repairing the existing copper line would be too complex / costly.

A new Freedom-of-Information (FoI) request has revealed that the Scottish Government‘s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across rural parts of the country (predominantly via FTTP), is now not expected to reach full completion until March 2028.

Openreach (BT) has published a summary of their network traffic for 2022, which among other things reveals the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past year. For example, the busiest month in 2022 was actually January, when a total of 5,701PB (PetaBytes) passed over their network.

Broadband provider BT has issued an update on the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was “paused” in May 2022 (here) following complaints about service outages during power cuts etc. But the ISP now says this is “likely” to restart during the “spring of 2023“.

Openreach (BT) has today announced large price increases across their various high-capacity Ethernet (EBD, EAD etc.) products and Excess Construction Charges (ECC) for UK ISPs, which are all due to be introduced from April 2023. The changes also help to position their 1Gb services as the new entry-level products.

It’s happened to a few people. You move into a new house and are told by your ISP that Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is available to the property, but soon after placing your order it becomes clear that some part of the network hasn’t been completed. Cue several months of waiting.

As expected, the Communications Workers Union (CWU) – representing up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s employees – has voted to accept last month’s pay offer (here) from the UK telecoms giant, which will avert any further risk of strike action over Christmas. But the fireworks may begin again next September 2023.

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47%  last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

We reported yesterday that Openreach (BT) had announced a range of price cuts for their full fibre broadband lines (here), but as part of the push toward FTTP the operator also hiked prices for copper-line broadband and phone services too (FTTC / SOGEA and G.fast etc.). Such changes will be particularly painful for those with no alternative.

Openreach (BT) has today responded to pressure from their ISP customers by unveiling a new round of major discounts (aka – “Equinox 2“) to the wholesale price of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products, which aims to keep the operator competitive and reduce prices on consumer packages.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just informed us that more broadband ISP traffic was carried across their UK network yesterday (Sunday 11th December 2022) than ever before – totalling 229PB (PetaBytes), which compares with 222PB on the previous highest day (5th December 2021).

The Welsh Government (WG) has released the Q3 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 34,122 extra premises (up from 32,949 in Q2) have now gained access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Openreach (BT) has today issued an update to their £15bn rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which “reformats the existing exchange areas already announced” and adds 12 new locations (mostly in London) to their deployment plan – covering an additional 184,806 homes and businesses.

Good news. One man has been charged, and three others arrested (currently released on bail), in connection with several thefts of Openreach’s copper broadband and phone cables across Kent (England) during the late spring and early summer this year. The incidents caused significant service outages across several villages.

Credible sources have confirmed that Openreach this week issued draft contracts for their forthcoming “Equinox 2” offer to UK broadband ISPs, which will further discount the prices of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product and explains why Cityfibre chose yesterday to launch their competition complaint (here).

Network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve formally submitted a Competition Act complaint to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Ofcom against Openreach (BT), which accuses the operator of “undertaking an aggressive strategy to foreclose infrastructure competition in the UK fibre broadband market“.
