Network operator Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs that they’ll be able to take advantage of free (connection charge) “Proactive FTTP Upgrades” for migrations to Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband speeds of 80Mbps (20Mbps upload) and above from 7th May 2025. This may or may not get passed on to related consumers.

A useful new interactive map has today been published by Thinkbroadband, which rather handily provides a visual overview of broadband related roadworks across the whole of England and thus helps to see who is building near to your home. Plans are also afoot to expand the map’s coverage beyond England.

The Devon & Cornwall Police (DCP) in England have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of causing criminal damage to Openreach’s broadband network in the town of Falmouth over the weekend. The incident knocked out local internet connectivity to around 100 premises (inc. many local businesses) and could cost up to £100,000 to repair.

Imagine you’ve just moved into a house. You’ve done all the checking, so you already know the only viable network operator has listed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband as being “available” to the property. But on the day of your install, the engineer tells you it needs a dig team and your ISP suggests you might have to wait nearly half a year for it to go live. Oh.. and there’s no other fixed line alternatives.

2025 Openreach skills training course for engineers

Openreach (BT) has opened a free five-day skills course in roadworks, signing, lighting, and guarding to Jobseekers in Bolton (more areas to follow). The course has been launched in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and is linked to the company’s commitment under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts.

A newspaper report has claimed that UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) could have “tens of thousands” of customers on CityFibre’s alternative Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network as soon as May 2025. But the “full scale” roll-out is allegedly not expected to be completed until just a little later (H2 2025). Packages have yet to go live.

Alternative network operator and ISP Trooli (Call Flow) has revealed that they’re also planning to shut their “up to” 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband network in Kent, which currently still covers hundreds of premises across the villages of Stansted and parts of Fairseat.

The CEO of network access provider Openreach, Clive Selley, has once again called on the government to help boost the UK roll-out of gigabit-capable broadband networks by making a number of key changes to several new bills. But gaining acceptance of these calls has proven difficult, particularly with a group of cross-party MPs campaigning for the opposite.

A new report from the Digital Communities All-Party Parliamentary Group (DC APPG) has been published, which examines the ongoing industry-led switchover from Openreach, BT and KCOM’s legacy phone lines to new digital (IP / VoIP based) networks. But it warns that, despite recent efforts, vulnerable users still face a “risk to life” from the switch.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their proposals for the new Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which it hopes will help to “promote competition and investment” in gigabit broadband and business connectivity. Broadly speaking, the regulator will be updating and tweaking their existing approach, with few radical changes this time around.

But their ambitions aren’t limited to retail packages.

The Barnet Council in London has reached a wayleave agreement (legal land/property access) that will enable Openreach (BT) to deploy their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 8,000 households managed by the UK council’s social housing provider, Barnet Homes.

Criminals have, for the second time in the space of around one month (here), today disrupted Openreach’s broadband services in the Cambridgeshire (England) town of St Neots by attempting to steal an unspecified amount of the UK network operator’s local copper telecoms cable.

The CEO of Openreach, Clive Selley, has backed the Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Barbara Janke after she proposed an amendment to the new Renters’ Rights Bill (RRB) that would allow tenants to request the right for a gigabit broadband installation, while ensuring that consent cannot be “unreasonably refused” by landlords (they’d get 28 days to make a decision).

City-focused broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which since 2011 claims to have built an alternative full fibre (FTTP/B) network to reach “more than” 1.73 million UK homes in parts of 64 towns and cities (inc. 340,000 customers), has today announced that they’ve appointed former Openreach (BT) veteran Mark Barlett to be their new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has posted a final evaluation of the previous ‘Superfast Broadband Programme’ (UK National Broadband Scheme), which reveals the various “economic, social, and environmental benefits” from the previous project to extend “superfast” (30Mbps+) coverage – run between 2016 and 2022.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative gigabit broadband operators, has today called on the UK government to ensure that their future Industrial Strategy “prioritises digital infrastructure“. The group wants this to be supported by a national campaign to promote full fibre-adoption, among other things.
