NOW TV Broadband Launch Sky UK Powered 300Mbps Full Fibre Plan

People looking to join Sky’s sibling NOW Broadband ISP sub-brand, which is better known for its NOW TV streaming service, may like to know that they will today launch an additional 300Mbps full fibre (FTTP) package via Openreach’s national network. Previously their fastest package topped out at 100Mbps.

A new “PIA Coalition” of alternative UK broadband networks, including nexfibre, AllPoints Fibre, CommunityFibre, Gigaclear, Netomnia and Brsk, has been setup and is calling on market regulator Ofcom to “ensure a level playing field for access” to Openreach’s passive infrastructure (existing cable ducts and poles) in its upcoming Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has begun to pilot a new “Ruggedised” Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is the optical modem that in a domestic installation of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP lines would normally be screwed to your inside wall. But this ONT is intended for “Uninhabitable Locations“.

A new survey of 427 small UK business owners, which was conducted by business focused broadband ISP bOnline in the late June to mid-July 2024 period, has found that 70% of respondents either don’t know if Openreach’s (BT) gigabit-capable FTTP broadband network has reached their area or believe that it is not yet available.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has issued another update on a long-running underground petrol leak in the Surrey village of Bramley, which has already restricted the ability to safely work on their local broadband ISP and phone network. The bad news today is that “making [this] network safe and accessible” could now take “at least 12 months“.

Sky UK Reveals Broadband Traffic, TV and Mobile Network Usage Stats

Comcast-owned internet, TV and mobile provider Sky UK has published an interesting new report, which reveals a lot of new details about their network and TV usage, which we haven’t previously seen. For example, ISP Sky Broadband now has 1.5 million FTTP customers and internet traffic peaked at 24.35Tbps on 9th April 2024.

Vodafone Tops 1.43 Million UK Broadband and 18.57M Mobile Customers

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q1 FY25 financial results, which reveals that their fixed broadband base grew again to total 1.427 million customers (up by 44k in Q1 vs 52k in the Q4 FY24) and their mobile base fell a bit to total 18.567 million (down by -71k in Q1 vs +66k in Q4 FY24).

BT Group Extend FTTP Broadband Cover to 15 Million UK Premises

Telecoms giant BT Group have today posted a brief trading update to the end of June 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises (unchanged on the previous quarter) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network – delivering total coverage to 15 million. Take-up also held at a steady 34%.

Openreach Name Next 92 UK Areas for Copper to FTTP Switch – Tranche 17

Openreach (BT) has today released the next batch of 92 exchanges (Tranche 17) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

Homes in the Suffolk (England) village of Felsham have been left without access to broadband and phone services for over a week because, allegedly, Openreach (BT) are unable to fix the problem – a damaged telecoms pole that was struck during a car accident on Cockfield Road – until they’ve received “an estimate” from the driver’s insurance company.

Openreach and BT might have recently delayed their plan to withdraw old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR) from Dec 2025 to 31st Jan 2027 (here and here), but conversely they’ve also just issued contract termination notifications to all WLR providers with an effective date of 31st Dec 2025. Don’t worry, it’ll make sense.

The BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker, which is really intended for network operators and ISPs but has always been used by savvy consumers to check the status of BTW and Openreach based services, appears to have recently made a change that seems to stop displaying ADSL results in areas where VDSL or FTTP (or both) are present.

Customers of mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone may like to know that the operator has finally introduced their new 2.2Gbps (symmetric) speed home broadband package, which is based off CityFibre’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network and includes their premium “Pro II” features. But they also have a 1.6Gbps option on Openreach’s network.

2024 H1 – UK Gigabit Broadband Coverage Tops 83 Percent

ISPreview’s latest biannual UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H1 2024 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 67.68% of premises (up from 60.54% in H2 2023) and 83.39% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 79.86%). Network provider Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs that they’re launching a new ‘Prove Telecare’ trial (SVR – Site Visit Reason), which is designed to help UK consumers with old analogue based phone (PSTN / WLR) and Telecare systems to safely migrate to modern broadband (FTTP and FTTC / SOGEA) connections with IP phone (VoIP) services.
