The latest independent H1 2020 study of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 87.3% of houses constructed this year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 83% in H2 2019), which rises to 97.6% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 96%).

Mainstream media reports have today claimed that a number of major private equity firms are exploring the possibility of making a joint bid for the whole BT Group, which could be worth up to £15bn. In response the operator has reportedly asked Goldman Sachs to update its bid defence strategy.

UK ISP Trunk Networks (Leetline) has streamlined their line-up of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages on Openreach’s (BT) national UK network and also reduced some of their prices. As a result their top 900Mbps (gigabit) tier is now just £66 inc. VAT per month (down from £144).

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Wildanet has extended their network to the market town of Liskeard and claimed that it is now Cornwall’s (England) first location to benefit from the “fastest level of broadband speeds available” at 1Gbps, except its not and the fastest consumer package on their site is only 50Mbps.

Openreach’s (BT) long-running efforts to apply ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology to UK Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband ISP lines at ECI using street cabinets may have hit yet another snag, which appears to have resulted in the enhancement being removed from some lines.

The Scottish Government has this afternoon revealed the details of their new voucher scheme, which aims to help “ensure superfast broadband access for all” by provide funding of up to £5,000 to help homes and businesses not in scope of either their R100 contracts or commercial roll-outs to obtain a 30Mbps+ capable connection.

The latest independent data has predicted that 2.07% (up from 1.8% in May 2020) of UK premises could be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network (this can stop you from ordering a new service), but some areas are being hit harder than others.

On the 10th September 2020 Openreach (BT) will make their new ‘Premium Connection’ service available to broadband ISPs that sell their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service, which costs £40 +vat more than the standard engineer install and in turn gives consumers a wider choice of installation activities.

UK ISP Pine Media, which recently revealed that the roll-out of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will be extended to cover 50,000 premises in the city of Sheffield (here), has revealed that they’re now going to extend this into rural parts of South Yorkshire and neighbouring Derbyshire.

As the heatwave starts to breakdown we’ve begun to see a growing number of “severe” thunderstorms strike across the UK, some of which have already caused damage to telecoms infrastructure. At present the worst incident has occurred in Edinburgh after a telephone exchange was flooded, but more storms are forecast.

Over the past few weeks criminal gangs have conducted a series of thefts (Metal Thefts) of copper telecoms cable in East London, which has disrupted broadband ISP and phone connectivity on Openreach’s (BT) UK network for those living closest to the incidents. As usual a reward of £1,000 is being offered to help catch the thieves.

Openreach has officially started to expand their range of EV cars and vans beyond last year’s limited trial of 11 vehicles with Renault (here), which they’ve done by adding 279 new EVs from Vauxhall that will soon be used by their UK broadband and phone engineers (including 270 Vivaro-e vans and 9 Corsa-e cars).

Last autumn Openreach (BT) revealed that the West Devon (England) town of Okehampton would be among 13 other rural locations to help pilot a “range of new tools and techniques” for deploying their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (here). Fast forward to today and the work is almost completed.

The UK Government has today announced that nearly half a million premises have been connected to gigabit-capable broadband since summer 2018, which stems from £1bn of public investment. But in order to push take-up they’re now launching a new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Wednesday’s release of the new Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 patch saw internet traffic over their network spike to 60% higher than the same time last week. During peak time (8pm to 10pm) there was also a 20% uplift in traffic. Openreach (BT) and TalkTalk were also hit.

A seemingly growing number of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP customers, at various UK providers, have over the past few weeks reported that requests to upgrade (regrade) their service to a faster tier are being delayed. The finger of blame is being cast toward BT’s Wholesale division.

UK ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions) has today launched a new residential division – Giganet Home. At the same time they’ve also expanded the availability of their Openreach based and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services to homes across the UK (initially it was only available to properties in Salisbury).
