Ofcom Drop Probe of BT Excess Construction Charges for Biz Lines

Ofcom has decided to drop last year’s investigation into whether BT had correctly billed for Excess Construction Charges (ECCs) when providing new UK business lines (Ethernet services etc.). The regulator made their decision in light of the “limited consumer harm” and “proactive steps” that Openreach had taken to address the issue.

Kier Secures Deal to Help Openreach Rollout Fibre Broadband

Civil engineering firm Kier has today secured a new “multi-million pound” Openreach Network Services Agreement (ONSA), which is their first with the network operator. The deal will see them assisting the telecoms giant in deploying and maintaining both fibre optic and copper broadband services across Hampshire and Berkshire.

Openreach Add 227 Rural UK Areas to FTTP Broadband Rollout UPDATE

Network provider Openreach (BT) has announced that 227 new UK locations – 250,000 premises – are being added to the roll-out phase of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which this time appears to focus on some of the “harder to reach” villages, market towns and rural areas.

Openreach’s (BT) commercial roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Northern Ireland has grown its reach to more than 260,000 premises, which has helped the region to push overall “full fibre” coverage to over 35% (here) and they claim that 40% will be achieved by March 2020.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has proposed a new framework, which could see builders of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks working together in the final 20-30% of hardest to reach premises to maximise coverage, such as by avoiding overbuild in areas that can’t support multiple networks and sharing access.

The Scottish Government‘s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has today issued an update on the progress of their much delayed £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which confirms how many premises will benefit in each area and what technologies will be used. Sadly the rollout will complete in 2023, rather than 2021.

Ofcom Start Major Review to Boost UK Full Fibre Broadband Market

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched their first combined Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which proposes major changes to help boost investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet (leased line) services for both the residential and business connectivity markets.

Openreach UK Prep Special Offers for Salisbury and Mildenhall

Ofcom UK Propose Predictable Annual Work Plan for 2020-21

The generalised summary covers everything from improving fairness for consumers (e.g. end-of-contract notifications), internet regulation and boosting the roll-out of faster broadband ISP and mobile services etc.

2019 H2 – UK Superfast Broadband Covers 96.5% as FTTP on 11%

The latest independent model has estimated that the H2 coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has risen to 96.45% (up from 96.1% in H1), while “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 11.01% of premises (up from 8.13%) and 59.30% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 57.5%).

ISP Aquiss Finally Launch UK Ultrafast FTTP Broadband Package

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today announced the launch of their first “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) class package, which is based off Openreach’s (BT) rapidly growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Until now they only offered FTTP via the slower “superfast” tiers (max speeds of 40Mbps or 80Mbps).

Herefordshire UK Set £500,000 Aside for Rural Broadband Grants UPDATE

The Herefordshire County Council (HCC) has confirmed that they’ve set aside £500,000 to support a new broadband grant scheme under the joint Fastershire project with Gloucestershire County Council, which will provide funding to help isolated communities that are not yet part of the current roll-out programme.
