The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, has claimed that Openreach’s (BT) aspiration to conduct a “large-scale” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 10 million UK homes and businesses by around 2025 is “dependent on up to £7 a month being added to broadband bills.”

Openreach has started an unexpected third UK ISP trial of their long in the making Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which will allow consumers to buy a standalone “fibre broadband” (FTTC VDSL2 or G.fast) line without the voice (phone) service.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new consultation on a change to help foster the roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks by preventing BT from reducing its wholesale charges for slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) connections in areas where rivals are building new networks.

As expected the Superfast Worcestershire programme has signed a new £6.2 million extension contract with BT (Openreach), which will push their FTTP/C based “superfast broadband” network out to reach more than 5,300 extra premises (reaching 96% of Worcestershire UK by 2019).

Sometimes getting fibre optic cable from one point to another over difficult terrain (rivers, unstable rocks etc.) can be tricky, which is partly why Openreach (BT) has today become one of the first in the world to use an aerial drone to help deploy the cable for a new FTTP network in the village of Pontfadog.

The £1.6bn+ state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest progress update to September 2017, which confirms that it has so far helped 4,651,700 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be covered by a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

As Openreach begins to rollout their new 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband service, which is set to reach 10 million UK premises by 2020, a new ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,834 readers has found that 75.4% are interested in upgrading to the new service.

The UK telecoms regulator has today announced that they are revoking and re-examining the changes imposed under their 2016 Business Connectivity Market Review (e.g. Dark Fibre Access), which follows a BT supported ruling from the Competition Appeal Tribunal against their market definitions.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today determined that it is “not materially misleading” to describe broadband services that use fibre optic cables for only part of the connection to consumers’ homes (e.g. FTTC) as “fibre broadband“, much to the annoyance of UK MPs and critics.

22nd November, 2017 (46 Comments)

The boss of rural ISP B4RN, which is rolling out a 1Gbps community-built and funded fibre optic (FTTH) broadband network to homes in Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, has warned that the UK Gov’s proposed 10Mbps USO may force them to “retrench within our current boundaries.”

21st November, 2017 (7 Comments)

Property developer Redrow has signed a new partnership with Openreach (BT) that will result in 3,000 properties on 14 existing developments being upgraded from ADSL to receive speeds of ‘up to’ 80Mbps via Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) tech. New builds can also expect to receive “full fibre” FTTP.

20th November, 2017 (62 Comments)

Newspaper reports indicate that BT’s voluntary proposal to spend up to £600m on delivering a 10Mbps minimum broadband speed across the United Kingdom, which would implement the Government’s proposed Universal Service Obligation (USO), looks increasingly likely to be rejected.

The Hammersmith & Fulham Council in London UK has reached an agreement with Openreach (BT) that will see a further 2,000 homes and businesses being put within reach of their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) superfast broadband network.

Openreach’s (BT) Modem Conformance Testing (MCT), which ensures that a router / modem device is approved for use on their hybrid fibre (FTTC) UK broadband network, needs to become much more accessible and transparent for consumers. Unapproved kit can also carry the risk of disconnection.

Around 60 homes and businesses in the remote rural Sutherland hamlet of Altnaharra (Scotland) can now access Openreach’s (BT) new 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) “ultrafast broadband” network, thanks to new equipment and a community dig to lay 4,800 metres of cable.

10th November, 2017 (16 Comments)

Residents in the West Yorkshire UK village of Streethouse have been left to suffer weeks of unstable broadband connectivity after a lorry crashed into the local transformer box, damaging its power supply. This has forced Openreach (BT) engineers to rely on battery backup at their FTTC street cabinet.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today handed down judgement against the market definitions used in Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Review, which upholds the July 2017 ruling (here) and means that the plan to cut leased line charges or force Openreach (BT) to offer Dark Fibre is still stalled.
