The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that a reinvestment of £3m from BT will soon enable Openreach to build more “ultrafast broadband” capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP networks across the rural region of Scotland, although it’s unclear how many extra premises will benefit.

UK ISPs that make use of Openreach’s network via their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products may be pleased to learn that the operator has discounted the price of their 10Gbps Cablelink services, which helps to provide the capacity for such full fibre connections.

The Welsh Government has quietly published an evaluation report into their Superfast Cymru project with BT (Openreach), which put around £225m of public funding toward an extended roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) in order to help cover poorly served parts of the country. Overall it’s a positive outcome.

Full fibre and broadband ISP network builder Cityfibre has decided that the debate over moving from old copper lines to new “full fibre” (FTTP) ones shouldn’t just be focused upon Openreach (BT). As a result the operator has proposed to conduct an industry-wide consultation to examine how alternative network providers can help.

UK ISP Sky Broadband is this week expected to put their new range of G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” packages live for everybody, which follows an initial soft launch in August (here). The bad news is that those waiting for FTTP (Openreach) to be supported may now have to wait until Q1 2020.

A new Openreach commissioned report, created by the Centre for Economics & Business Research (CEBR), has estimated that connecting the whole of the UK to a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by the end of 2025 could result in a £59bn economic boost (equivalent to £1,700+ per worker) – rising to £70bn by 2038.

The Scottish Government today announced that BT is their ONLY bidder for two of the three areas under the new £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which originally (here) aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premise in Scotland” by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial).

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project has announced that their Openreach (BT) supported roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services has now reached over 940,000 extra premises, which equates to nearly 95% with access to a “superfast broadband” speed of 24Mbps+.

Openreach (BT) has today unveiled trials to test a “range of new tools and techniques” for deploying their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which under the plan could help 13 of the UK’s remote rural villages and towns (50,000 premises) to access the service and support the Government’s £5bn plan.

The Government’s £1.7bn Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2012/13 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to nearly 5.2 million extra UK premises, has published its latest quarterly customer take-up data to the end of June 2019. Some rollouts are now seeing almost 70% adoption!

The recent cancellation of UK ISP Gigaclear’s “full fibre” (FTTP) rollout contract under the Connecting Devon and Somerset project (here) has left many rural areas with concerns. As a result the Devon County Council has now moved to assure them that the roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) is continuing.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has today unveiled the next quarterly batch of 29 new UK rollout locations (total of 103 so far) for their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which aims to cover 4 million premises (homes and businesses) by March 2021 and then 15 million by around 2025.

The trouble prone Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project, which recently took the decision to end their Phase 2 contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear due to significant roll-out delays (here), has confirmed that they don’t expect to sign a new supplier contract until around November 2020.

Following earlier trials Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that it will proceed to deploy Fujikura’s Air-Blown Wrapping Tube Cable™ (AB-WTC), which they claim could result in a reduction of up to 80% in installation time compared with traditional cables that require fibres to be spliced individually.

London-focused UK broadband ISP Community Fibre has signed a new agreement with Croydon Council, which will enable their Gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach an additional 11,000 social homes across the borough. Openreach (BT) has also reached a similar access agreement.

The Superfast South Yorkshire project has today announced the official completion of their £27m Phase 1 rollout contract with Openreach (BT) and the BDUK programme, which helped to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks available to 95,000 extra premises (over 97% coverage of the county).

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project has announced that Openreach (BT) have just built their 5000th FTTC (VDSL2) broadband ISP cabinet under the project, which will also be one of the “last for the programme” as they switch to focus on Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.
