Openreach (BT) appears to be hunting for a third strategic supplier to help support their UK roll-out of a new Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The move might also help to reduce their reliance on Chinese firm Huawei, which remains the subject of on-going security concerns.

Openreach (BT) has announced that, after 12 months of building, their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the UK city of Bristol has now extended its coverage to 80,000 local premises (40% of the city) and rising. Sadly they don’t say how much further they intend to go.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun a consultation on the proposed introduction of a new “bulk upgrade process,” which requires an exclusion in Openreach’s (BT) quality of service regulation but would make it more efficient for them to upgrade slower lines to FTTC (VDSL2) based broadband ISP connections.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their new Dark Fibre X product, which is only focused upon serving the very limited inter-exchange connectivity market, will now get its full launch (national UK availability) a little earlier than expected on 20th December 2019.

The Scottish Government has awarded BT (Openreach) the final LOT 1 contract – as preferred bidder – to deliver their new £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which originally (here) aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premises in Scotland” by the end of 2021.

Many homes and businesses in the St Johns suburb of Worcester have been left without access to both broadband and phone services for several days, which occurred after criminals ripped up two of Openreach’s (BT) core underground copper telecoms cables from the ground (aka – Metal Theft) on Tuesday.

Openreach (BT) plan to launch a new symmetric “low speed” 500Kbps (0.5Mbps) tier on their UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which might seem odd until you realise that it’s part of their transition away from the old phone services (WLR / PSTN). Elsewhere FTTP on Demand is being trialled in apartment blocks.

The UK Labour Party has set out their broadband pledge for the General Election on 12th December 2019, which includes a commitment to invest £20.3bn into rolling out “full fibre” (FTTP) by 2030, nationalising Openreach (BT) into public ownership and if that wasn’t quite radical enough then access to this will be.. FREE.

The Welsh Government (WG) yesterday announced – during a debate on Digital Connectivity – a new £10 million fund that will be targeted to help bring “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks to poorly served communities in the mostly rural final 5% of Wales.

Mobile giant and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of September (Q2 FY20), which revealed that they managed to add an impressive 61,000 new fixed broadband customers in the quarter (total base of 667,000) and that’s up from +31K in the previous quarter.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today moved to mix the on-going rollout of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Gigafast Broadband” network with Cityfibre by striking a new commercial deal with Openreach (BT), which gives them access to the latter’s “full fibre” network too.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset project has opened a public consultation on their recent Open Market Review (OMR), which examined the current and future level of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in the two counties and set out a proposed intervention area, ahead of seeking suppliers for a new contract.

Openreach has launched a new localised marketing promotion for UK ISPs, which offers discounts on the monthly rental and one-off connection costs of their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in a maximum of four conurbations (i.e. Fibre First cities with a limited footprint from 10,000 and up to 500,000 premises).

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) has announced that UK ISP Airband and network operator Openreach (BT) have won several new contracts – supported by a funding boost of £6.3m from DEFRA – to help rollout “ultrafast broadband” (mostly FTTP) across more homes and businesses in the county.

BT Group’s latest results to the end of September 2019 (Q2 19/20 financial) confirm that Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has increased its coverage to total 4.2 million premises (up from 3.7m last quarter), which includes 1.81m on FTTP (up from 1.51m) and 2.42m on hybrid fibre G.fast (up from 2.16m).

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has announced that they’ve been able to harness Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts in order to complete the expansion of their FTTP based ultrafast broadband and TV network to 15,500 premises (homes and businesses) in the town of Lurgan, County Armagh (Northern Ireland).

KCOM’s £85m rollout of a new FTTP broadband ISP network in Hull, as well as Digital Scotland‘s £442m (public and private investment) work with Openreach (BT) to spread “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 940,000 extra Scottish premises, have today both been named as UK finalists for the 2019 European Broadband Awards.
