Reports this morning claim that BT (Openreach) are in “secret” negotiations with the government and UK ISPs about a new six point plan, which could see the last of their old copper phone lines being switched off by 2027 and replaced by “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband. Provided everybody agrees of course.

A couple of months ago Openreach (BT) cut the wholesale prices for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband lines for UK ISPs (here) and revealed that they were planning to introduce two new top tiers for consumers – 550Mbps (75Mbps upload) and 1000Mbps (115Mbps). Today we’ve learnt how much these will cost.

The Welsh Government (WG) has quietly made a small but important change to LOT 1 (North West Wales) of their £22.5m Phase 2 “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) roll-out contract with BT (Openreach), which so far as we can tell appears to replace the hybrid fibre FTTC deployment areas with ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today established a new Cymru Wales Board, whose members include engineers and support staff from across the country. The board’s primary purpose will be to provide guidance and direction to the organisation, not least to help its rollout of FTTC and FTTP broadband ISP networks.

In yet another major upset the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has today taken the decision to end their contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear, which last year suffered significant delays that set some parts of their rollout back by around 2 years. Sadly efforts to agree a revised plan were not successful.

Openreach (BT) has today informed ISPs that they are holding off giving any further guidance on future build plans for their hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) technology, which means that under the existing rollout they will only cover 2.73 million UK premises by March 2020..

The Kent County Council in England has confirmed that 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband from Openreach (BT) is set to reach an additional 5,000 rural premises. On top of that they’ve boosted the value of the UK Government’s rural Gigabit broadband vouchers from £1,500 to £2,500 per household.

Openreach (BT) has announced that more than 45,000 premises in Salford (Greater Manchester) can now access their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which has been deployed as part of their work to cover 4 million premises by March 2021 and possibly 15 million by around 2025.

Portsmouth-based UK ISP toob, which was setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and has attracted investment of £75m (here), is officially starting the rollout of their 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Southampton, despite Virgin Media’s threat to “keep them out of our city.”

Police are investigating after around 2,200 premises in Cambourne were left without broadband ISP and phone access to Openreach’s (BT) national network following a major theft of the operator’s core copper cables, which is the latest in a spate of seemingly related “Metal Theft” incidents in Cambridgeshire.

5th September, 2019 (50 Comments)

Installations of Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based UK ultrafast broadband ISP technology will soon begin seeing a new Optical Network Unit (ONT), which is not only very compact (pictured top) but also comes in at a third of the cost of the existing unit. Obviously they’ve sacrificed a few little things.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today taken the official wraps off their new Sky Hub (SR203 / Sky Q Hub 2) wireless broadband router and confirmed the launch of a new Sky WiFi Guarantee, the latter of which also comes with the existing “Boost” add-on features but costs +£5 extra per month instead of the current +£2.50.

A hint of progress is in the air as the Welsh Government (WG), Openreach (BT) and Building Digital UK (DCMS) programme are continuing their efforts to find a solution for the “stranded assets” problem, which reflects thousands of premises on unfinished (part-built) “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) deployments in Wales.

Last year’s move by Openreach (BT) to drop the deployment cost of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband ISP network infrastructure by an average of 75% (here), which focused upon new build UK homes at sites with fewer than 30 premises, has been extended to include commercial premises.

Openreach’s (BT) broadband ISP and phone network in Cambridgeshire (England) has been struck by a series of “major cable thefts” over the past two weeks, which is understood to have disrupted communication services for around 4,000 premises.
