A new report has claimed that some of BT’s “biggest shareholders” will urge any future CEO of the telecoms and broadband ISP giant to put serious consideration toward the old idea of splitting out their UK network access division, Openreach, in the hope of boosting the company’s share price.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has today published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2018 (Q1) for the state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom, which continues to see strong levels of adoption.

The Government have today estimated that their £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project, which with the help of operators like BT (Openreach) and Gigaclear has extended fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to cover 95%+ of UK premises, also delivered a £9bn boost to national business turnover.

The Scottish Government’s future £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) superfast broadband rollout programme could be facing a problem after sources told ISPreview.co.uk that Axione, one of three remaining bidders for the contract, had allegedly set its lawyers on BT (Openreach) over claims of anti-competitive behaviour.

Industry sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that Openreach (BT) are to revise down their UK rollout plan for 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband ISP technology from 10 million to nearly 6 million premises. The aim is to refocus on their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) deployment.

The City of London Corporation has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they last week sent a letter to the heads of various agencies across the area. This seeks to encourage take-up of ultrafast FTTP broadband and highlights Openreach’s (BT) concern about the challenge of getting access permission from landlords.

Openreach (BT) has today published the first Draft Reference Offer for their revised Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product, which as per Ofcom’s requirements is intended to make it cheaper and easier for ISPs to deploy their own “full fibre” broadband networks via existing cable ducts and telegraph poles.

On 28th August 2018 Openreach (BT) will begin trialling a new 1Gbps variant of their existing Street Access product for UK businesses and wireless ISPs / network operators (previously limited to 100Mbps), which delivers Ethernet data connectivity to street furniture (lampposts, cabinets etc.).

Last week the UK Government proposed an industry led “switchover” process to remove the old copper line (broadband and phone) telecoms network as “full fibre” (FTTP/H) is deployed, but it stopped short of setting a full switch-off date. Now the Institute of Directors has called for a solid date, possibly as early as 2025.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today launched the Coppersaurus campaign, which aims to draw attention to the UK’s “prehistoric broadband” and support their court case to end “misleading” uses of “fibre” terminology in ISP adverts (i.e. when it’s used to describe slower hybrid copper and fibre connections).

The London Borough of Bexley has welcomed a new partnership agreement between its street works team and Openreach (BT), which looks set to see 25,000 homes around Crayford and Erith being upgraded to ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology during 2018/19.
