The Welsh Government (WG) has now “officially started work” on the national roll-out of its £425m scheme to make superfast broadband speeds of at least 30Mbps (Megabits per second) available to 96% of homes and businesses in Wales (United Kingdom) by the end of 2015. But many details remain unknown.

Chris Smedley, the boss of dedicated fibre optic provider GEO Networks, has warned in a new video interview that without better regulation from Ofcom it will remain “almost impossible to take on BT” in the United Kingdom’s broadband market; especially in terms of gaining economically viable access to the operators cable ducts and poles.

BT has warned Dido Harding, the boss of its arch rival TalkTalk, that her ISP is in danger of being “remembered as broadband luddites clinging to a copper raft in a sea of fibre” after Harding criticised the lack of competition and regulation in the United Kingdom’s emerging market for fibre optic based superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services.

The Advertising Standards Authority UK (ASA) has also banned a TV and press advert for one of BT’s broadband and phone bundles after it misleadingly claimed to be “free for six months” when in fact the line rental was still payable.

Netflix UK, the unlimited movies and TV subscription based video streaming service, has published its latest December 2012 rankings for broadband Internet Service Providers in the United Kingdom. The ratings reflect the average performance of all Netflix video streams on each ISP.

BT Retail has today announced the launch of its new SmartTalk (BTSmartTalk) app for Apple iPhone and Android mobiles. The app requires a wifi or Mobile Broadband connection and enables customers to make phone calls via their smartphone and have them billed under their existing home phone plan (whether in the UK or abroad).

Homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight, the largest island in England (south coast), have been hit by two separate broadband and phone outages this week after problems with BTOpenreach’s “planned maintenance” and a separate submarine fibre optic cable break impacted multiple ISPs on the island.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld fifteen complainants against BT’s website based broadband availability checker service because it often delivered unreliable “provisional” coverage dates for their UK superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service and was thus deemed “likely to mislead“.

A two year legal battle between BT and several major ISPs has finally ended with Ofcom forcing the national UK telecoms operator to pay a fine of £94,823,000 after it was found to have overcharged the broadband providers for Backhaul Extension Services (BES) between 2004/6 and 2011.

BT and the Suffolk County Council (SCC) have today signed a new £40 million contract that will use government state aid from the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office to help make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015 (but it use to be June 2015).

BT and the Norfolk County Council (NCC) have today signed a new £41 million contract, which will see a mix of public and private money being used to help make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services reach “more than” 80% of local homes and businesses by autumn 2015 (i.e. below the UK’s national target of at least 90%).

BTOpenreach, which looks after BT’s national UK telecoms network, has advised ISPs of several “improvements” to its Service Level Agreement (SLA) and Guarantees (SLG) that will reduce the provision time for new phone lines and improve compensation when things go wrong.
