The Government has today placed their previous decision to BAN Huawei’s equipment from ultrafast 5G mobile networks (including restrictions on its use in full fibre broadband infrastructure) on more of a legal footing, which it has done by issuing legal notices to 35 telecoms network operators.

Openreach (BT) has today released the ‘Tranche 10’ batch of 32 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in each area can get “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Broadband giant BT has today launched a new service, which is designed to help their UK business customers reduce electronic waste (e-waste) by enabling their replaced or decommissioned network kit to be shipped back to Cisco in order to be “responsibly re-used or recycled” through its ‘take-back and reuse’ scheme.

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has announced that from today it will no longer be providing managed broadband and phone services to new residential customers under the John Lewis brand and the service will eventually close.

The latest data from Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net website, is beginning to show the sort of impact that the new generation of alternative full fibre broadband networks (AltNets) are having across the UK. But for now, the seven largest ISPs still dominate the country’s fixed broadband market.

Opensignal has published their biannual September 2022 Mobile Network Experience Report, which measures the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to determine which delivers the best performance. Both EE and Three UK picked up most of the wins.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve teamed up with the Money Adviser Network to offer customers free, independent debt advice through referrals from customer service advisors. Nearly 3,000 customers are said to have so far benefitted from the service since its rollout in June 2022.

The Net Neutrality debate (i.e. protecting the open internet from abuse by UK broadband ISPs and mobile operators) reared its head again today after BT and Vodafone both put their names to a new statement by the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association (ENTO), which was signed by 16 telcos’ CEOs.

The Welsh Government (WG) has shared a Q2 2022 progress update on their £52.5 million Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 32,949 extra premises (up from 29,959 in Q1) have now gained access to a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

The Communications Workers Union has just upped the ante in its pay dispute with broadband and telecoms giant BT (including Openreach) by announcing a third round of national strikes, which have been staggered to hit the operator over four days. But worryingly, the next strike will include hundreds of 999 emergency call handlers.

Ofcom has confirmed that they will update their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which among other things will extend the current “Right to Exit” (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a speed problem) so that it applies to more aspects of a service bundle. The changes will go live on 21st December 2022.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer division, Marc Allera, has revealed that the future of their low-cost phone and broadband ISP sub-brand, Plusnet, is under assessment. The move is understood to form part of their ongoing work to turn EE – over time – into their “flagship brand for our consumer customers“.

The state-aid backed Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project has announced that Openreach (BT) have officially completed their fibre-based (FTTC and FTTP) deployment contract under the scheme, which has so far enabled more than 190,000 extra premises to access faster broadband speeds since 2021 (take-up is at 80%).

Up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s unionised workers will today be heading back to hundreds of picket lines across the UK as they begin a second major national strike, which is part of an ongoing pay dispute. The strike, which will run through today and tomorrow, is expected to cause more delays to service provisions etc.
