Cable giant Virgin Media and mobile operator Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile) have allegedly become the targets of a colossal takeover bid by two private equity firms, KKR and Apax Partners, which is being headed up by Tom Alexander (former CEO of Everything Everywhere).

Manchester-based business ISP Metronet UK, which operates a hybrid superfast fibre optic (FTTx) and wireless broadband network, claim to be planning for further coverage expansion after a management buyout supported by private equity firm LDC pushed an additional investment of £11 Million into the provider.

Two business ISPs based in the Thames Valley region, Xifos and Perceptive Online, have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to merge their businesses. The combined provider that results will become “dedicated to providing quality Cloud based services“.

Business ISP Metronet UK has today announced the expansion of its hybrid superfast fibre optic (FTTx) and wireless broadband network to reach firms in the market town of Macclesfield (Cheshire East / Cheshire) and surrounding areas, where local businesses have allegedly been unhappy with BT’s existing FTTC service.

The annual Comms Business Awards, which will this year be held at the Lancaster London hotel on 21st June, have this week published their full shortlist of potential winners. The awards include several broadband ISP related categories, albeit with more of a business than consumer focus.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has published a new report (“The Missing Links”) which claims that 60% of UK businesses in rural areas (countryside) suffer from slow broadband ISP speeds. As a result the group has called on the government to raise its superfast broadband coverage target from 90% to 98% of “rural communities and businesses” by 2015.

Business ISP Fluidata has today announced the launch of its new PureFluid PULSE service, which effectively bonds (line-bonding) up to three 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based broadband connections to deliver a maximum internet download speed of up to 200Mbps (60Mbps upload).

I recently had a discussion with a prospect about the role and the value of the ISP in today’s telecoms industry. We discussed whether the opinion amongst some that see ISPs as “resellers; pointless middlemen; and a barely necessary layer between source and supply” had any validity and whether it’s, perhaps, more a case that the lines have blurred and ISPs have evolved to become more than simple service providers?

Business focused ISP Zen Internet UK has upgraded its Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) product, a dedicated multiple copper pairs based Ethernet service that is claimed to be more reliable than ADSL style solutions, to offer guaranteed symmetric internet connection speeds of 35Mbps (Megabits per second) with unlimited usage.

Communications provider Easynet Global Services has today launched a range of new ‘up to’ 80Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based business superfast broadband internet access products for the UK market, which it curiously claims will be available to 80% of UK businesses by 2014.

Business ISP Fluidata, which earlier this year warned of the potential danger from an increase in office internet traffic during this year’s 2012 London Olympic Games (here), has today revealed how its own broadband network will cope with the event. A major £2.4M upgrade has also been announced.

Communications provider Vodafone (Europe) has reached a “fair and reasonable” agreement to buy global telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) for a cash offer of £1.044 Billion (38p per CWW share), which is well above the estimated £700m that had been hinted at during February 2012 (here) when news of the talks first broke.

Communications provider Entanet, which supplies broadband internet access solutions to UK ISPs, has announced improvements to its network infrastructure by upgrading the capacity of their northern ring to 10Gbps, whilst also announcing a new colocation site that will be available from the end of April 2012.

The business division of UK cable operator Virgin Media (VirginMedia Business) has surveyed 5,000 business owners from companies with 100+ employees and discovered that 21% “needed” more wireless internet access in stores in order to provide “innovative sales offers and marketing promotions” to customers.
