Three of the UK’s most pioneering providers’ of ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband – Gigaclear, Cityfibre and Hyperoptic – have today called on the Advertising Standards Authority to stop rivals from using the term “fibre” to advertise services delivered over slower copper wires.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre, which has established a number of largely business and public sector focused FTTP broadband and Ethernet networks around UK cities, today claims to have “achieved full ISO certification in all core management systems” and all within the space of just 12 months.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today published their latest full year results to 31st March 2017, which saw them bleed fewer on-net broadband subscribers (-20k in H2 vs -29k in H1) in the period to total 3,947,000 and 25% of those take their FTTC based “fibre broadband“.

Alternative fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has posted their final results to the end of 2016, which reveals that their “completed” cable duct and fibre optic network (FTTP) footprint has increased to 3,383km (up from 743km in 2015) and they now serve 3,962 customer premises (up from 1,200).

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has appointed BT’s former Head of Local Business, Jatinder Sispal, to become their new Head of Carrier and National Providers. Jtinder has been in the technology and telecoms sector for 22 years, also holding senior roles at Telstra and Colt.

Cityfibre has announced that two further large towns in Berkshire (England) – Slough and Maidenhead – will be the next on their list to benefit from the deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet network for local businesses.

The Scottish Road Works Commissioner has fined fibre optic network builder Cityfibre £35,000 due to a “number of serious failures to comply with road works legislation in Scotland,” such as the one that occurred in Edinburgh (here) after a contractor sat exposed in a manhole on a busy street.

Telecoms and broadband companies including BT, Virgin Media and Cityfibre have been named and shamed by the Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire (England) after the local authority highlighted frustration at the rise in “defective” street works, which required the civil works to be re-done.

The first businesses have this week gone live on Cityfibre’s new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet networks in the Berkshire towns of Bracknell and Reading, with local business ISP BtL Communications supplying the connectivity products.

Cityfibre has announced that the construction of their pure fibre optic ultrafast broadband and Ethernet network in the city of Glasgow (Scotland) has now begun moving westwards into the Finnieston area, where a number of local businesses have expressed an interest in receiving their service.

Cityfibre has suspended one of their civil works contractors, KNNS, in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland). The action occurred after a dashcam video emerged that showed one of their fibre optic engineers sitting exposed in a manhole on a busy 30MPH street, with only two small traffic cones for protection.

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today announced the appointment of Christopher Michael Renwick Stone (aged 54) to become the company’s new Non-Executive Chairman with immediate effect. Chris is currently a Non-Executive Director (formerly CEO) of Radius Worldwide.

Last week we reported on the case of four men who had been found guilty of a £160m financing fraud that involved Total Asset Finance (TAF) and H2O Networks Ltd. (here), which was one of the UK’s early FTTH/P network pioneers. The men have now been sentenced to a total of 44 years in jail.

After years of waiting the Southwark Crown Court has found four men guilty of a £160 million financing fraud, which is a case that began in 2010/11 (here) after the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) opened an investigation into one of the UK’s early pioneers of alternative fibre optic broadband networks.

Business ISP Gamma has moved to upgrade their national core network in the United Kingdom by signing a new long-haul Dark Fibre agreement with Cityfibre. The access agreement will connect 15 data centres and exchanges across the country via CityFibre’s long-distance and metro networks.

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today published a preliminary trading update for the year to 31st December 2016, which among other things confirms that they have pure fibre networks in 42 UK “cities” and this reflects 3,383km of network assets in use (up from 743km at the end of 2015).
