The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a poster advert for BT’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband service after it was found to have “misleadingly” claimed to offer “more reliable speeds” than a similar package on Virgin Media’s network in the Bristol area.

A new Point Topic study, commissioned by TV and WiFi Mesh provider Netgem, has predicted that Alternative Networks (AltNet) and “Challenger ISPs” could gain up to 1 million additional UK customers by 2025, which would increase their market share to 14.5% (3.74 million customers) from 12.5% in 2021.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.6% (18.59 million) in Q4 2020, which is down slightly from 2.07% in the previous quarter but still pushes the overall total to 1.18 billion. Meanwhile, the UK reported the strongest quarterly “full fibre” (FTTP) growth of any country on 28.6%.

Broadband ISP and Pay TV provider Virgin Media UK has today announced that a further 13,300 homes in parts of Northern Ireland, specifically Newry, Markethill, Camlough and Bessbrook, have just benefitted from the ongoing expansion of their gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) appears to have expanded last year’s DOCSIS 3.1 based trial, which took place in the Berkshire town of Thatcham (here) and pushed their network to “hyperfast” download speeds of up to 2.2Gbps (214Mbps upload), to include parts of Southampton (Hampshire) and Manchester.

A new agreement signed by Liberty Global will see broadband ISP Virgin Media UK expanding the use of Teleste‘s Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) technology in their network, which should help to get the best performance out of their platform and support the rollout of gigabit speeds to homes.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has today “provisionally” cleared the proposed £31bn (total enterprise value) mega merger between broadband provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica), which will light the fuse on a major £10bn project to extend “full fibre” FTTP and 5G mobile services.

Some 13,200 homes in the large Derbyshire (England) market town of Chesterfield have just become the latest to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband and TV network, which by the end of 2021 will be able to deliver gigabit speeds to locals.

A new request to Ofcom for Code Powers from Liberty Property Co II Limited, which is a subsidiary of Liberty Global, has indicated that it intends to “utilise Virgin Media’s wholesale products” in order to facilitate the “construction and operation of a broadband network” across the UK.

At present a mass of rival networks are currently deploying gigabit-capable home broadband services across the United Kingdom and, as part of that, we thought it might be interesting to take a snap-shot of how much each ISP charges for their top 1Gbps (average 900Mbps+) tier. The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has this afternoon praised broadband ISPs for helping to create more than 22,000 new jobs over the past year as “forecasts for gigabit rollout are revised further upwards,” which is an interesting statement coming so soon after the Government’s decision to downgrade their own coverage target.

A further 5,400 homes in the Staffordshire (England) market town of Burton upon Trent have now gained access to Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network. The work reflects a second expansion after 14,000 premises were put within reach a few years ago (here), albeit mostly via their old coax network.

Some 2,500 additional homes in the Cheshire town of Alsager have today become the latest to benefit from ISP Virgin Media’s ongoing UK expansion of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which can deliver average top download speeds of around 630Mbps (reaching 1Gbps+ in the near future).

The Chair of the cross-party DCMS Select Committee, Julian Knight, has criticised the UK Government for having “failed to answer” a key question in their recent report, which called for a detailed plan to show how it would deliver on its revised-down target for “gigabit-capable broadband.” The committee is now seeking a fuller response.
