Low-cost focused UK broadband ISP Plusnet, which is a BT Group (EE) sibling, is to follow their parents by introducing a new pricing model, which moves away from the old percentage (%) figures and inflation (CPI) approach to annual price hikes. Instead, from 9th July 2024, they’ll introduce a “clear and simple” view of future price rises, expressed in “pounds and pence“.

The latest update from Transport for London (TfL) has revealed that 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) signals have now been extended to cover the first tunnel sections on the Elizabeth line (running approximately 5 miles). Further tunnelled sections to Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich will be connected this summer.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study, which examined the fixed broadband performance and quality of three major UK ISPs – BT, Sky Broadband and Vodafone. Overall, BT ended up topping the rankings, but it’s unclear why they left out TalkTalk and Virgin Media, both of which are bigger than Vodafone.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave and CommScope have jointly begun to deploy a new “world first” solution, which can bring 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) connectivity from all four UK mobile network operators (Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2) indoors via a single combined small cell box.

Mobile network operator Vodafone has this afternoon followed both O2 (Virgin Media) and EE (BT) in announcing that they’ve “hit [the] Partial Not Spot (PNS) coverage target of the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme“, which was achieved by expanding their 4G (mobile broadband) coverage to a total of 400 rural locations.

BT (EE) has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re in advanced talks over a new agreement with rivals, including at least O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone, that will give them the ability to access some of EE’s mobile masts in remote locations. The deal may help to improve 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in Partial Not-Spot areas and tackle delays.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a second 1.6Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network, which is called the ‘Broadband Made for Gamers‘ bundle and claims to offer online gamers “lower latency, game server geofencing and in-home network prioritisation,” among other things.

A new study conducted by technical consultancy firm FarrPoint, which was commissioned by UK telecoms operator EE (BT), has claimed that deploying 4G mobile (mobile broadband) networks can deliver social and economic benefits, worth between £249,000 and £6.9m, to different types of rural communities over 15 years.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve deployed “cell sleep” technology across their UK 4G (mobile broadband) network, which they “anticipate” could deliver total energy savings of up to 4.5m KWh per year – reducing both their demand on the local grid and helping to cut costs at a time of high electricity prices.

Ofcom has just confirmed that they will revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1899.9 – 1920MHz) by 3rd April 2029, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

Energy and communications provider Telecom Plus, which trades as Utility Warehouse (UW), has just published their latest Full Year Results and revealed that their broadband ISP grew its total UK customer base to 374,792 (up by 20.67k in the year) and their mobile base hit 466,216 (up by 72k).

Telecoms giant BT has kindly provided ISPreview with some internet traffic statistics from the first UEFA Euro 2024 football match between England and Serbia, which took place at 8pm on Sunday (16th June 2024), as well as the opening match between Germany and Scotland on Friday 14th (8:30pm).

News reports have indicated that the auditor – PKF Littlejohn – for mobile network operator Lyca Mobile, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform in the UK, were unable to sign off the company’s most recent accounts (to December 2022) due to various concerns, such as the recoverability of a due balance of nearly £150m.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (EE) has warned the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that the mega-merger (here) between rival mobile operators Three UK and Vodafone would give rise to a “substantial lessening of competition“, which they claim would “ultimately [result] in higher prices, poorer network quality, and reduced incentives to invest.”

Some customers of mobile network operator Lyca Mobile, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform in the UK, are reporting that they’ve been unable to access the provider’s latest and fastest 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity service for around a month. Related users find that only 4G is now available to them.

Consumer magazine Which? has revealed the results of a recent consumer survey of 3,739 UK mobile users, which found that the most common complaints related to poor signal, price rises, receiving SPAM from their provider and poor customer service. Three UK and Lyca Mobile were also most likely to have had customers experiencing a problem in the past year.
