Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is typically positioned as BT’s low-cost division for basic internet access services, has now confirmed that their own-brand of EE powered Pay Monthly SIM-Only Mobile plans will finally be closing “throughout” this month (June 2024). Customers must transfer before their accounts are closed to avoid losing their service and number.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is responsible for overseeing UK government expenditures to ensure they are effective, has warned that the current build pace of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile (broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025) “may not be sustainable“.

The UK telecoms, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today hit broadband ISP BT (including subsidiaries EE and Plusnet) with a fine of £2.8 million, which occurred after their investigation found the operator had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published a new study that attempts to rank 20 of London’s Boroughs based on the level of “Good Mobile Coverage” they receive from the UK’s mobile network operators. Overall, Southwark had the highest average levels of Good Coverage (76.3%), while Barnet had the lowest (48%).

Sources have informed ISPreview that broadband ISP EE (BT) appears to have started inviting customers, specifically only those on one of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products, to take part in a new “Hub Enhancement Trial“. This is testing “new technology that’s designed to provide a coverage boost/enhanced Wi-Fi experience in the home“.

The latest BT Group H2 FY24 results to March 2024 reveal that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 1 million premises to their coverage in the quarter to cover 13.812m, while EE’s 5G mobile covers 75% of the population (up from 72% in H1), the PSTN (analogue phone) migration won’t complete until Jan 2027 and Openreach is named “preferred bidder” for Type C Project Gigabit contracts.

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has published a new report that attempts to analyse the “user experience” impact of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) decision to open up their existing fixed broadband ISP network to wholesale (here) via a new business (NetCo), which is expected to be introduced during the second half of 2025.

Mobile network operators can now deploy 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity across more stations and tube lines on the London Underground, which comes after the ongoing network roll-out was extended to include Paddington, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich on the Elizabeth line.

Several thousand of 1p Mobile’s customers in the UK are currently suffering from network connectivity problems, which appears to have started yesterday morning and remains ongoing today. At the same time, the operator’s website reports that they’re also having “issues with our customer service telephone system” (probably due to high demand).

The CEO of the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency, Dean Creamer, has told MPs on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that officials have rejected a request from several mobile operators to delay completion of the 4G roll-out for Partial Not-Spot (PNS) areas under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project by 18-months.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results of their latest 2024 consumer survey of UK mobile operators, which revealed the best and worst providers. Overall the four primary operators (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK) came at or near the bottom of the table, while Tesco Mobile attracted the highest customer score.

Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q4 2023, which once again names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

EE) has today introduced their new “clear and simple” pricing policy, which sees them move away from % figures and CPI (inflation)-linked changes for their monthly plans in order to “provide certainty for our customers on exactly what their price change will be, and when“.
