A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has announced that they intend to recruit over 600 apprentices and graduates this year (up from 428 last year), which forms part of their September 2022 intake. This will reflect roles spanning areas such as engineering (5G and FTTP etc.), UK customer service, research and cyber-security.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve joined with existing network supplier Nokia to conduct one of their first UK trials of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) technology in the East Yorkshire City of Hull, which they hope will “enhance [the] mobile broadband experience” for locals.

Mobile operator EE has quietly confirmed that their indoor femtocell based signal booster device (‘Signal Box‘), which used an existing fixed line broadband ISP connection to create its own indoor 3G mobile signal over a specific band (e.g. 2100MHz), will be “fully closed” (for existing customers) by 30th June 2022.

The MD Consumer Customer Services at UK ISP BT (EE), Nick Lane, has today confirmed yesterday’s report (here) that they would hit customers with an annual price increase of 9.3% (up from 4.5% last year) from 31st March 2022 and said it was as a “necessary part of business … [to] keep up with the rising costs we face.”

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics, which was recently gobbled by Ookla (here), has today published their latest H2 2021 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again awards the top spot to EE (BT), with Vodafone being the runner-up.

The Office of National Statistics has today published the latest UK inflation figures, which sees the Consumer Price Index (CPI) hit 5.4% and the Retail Price Index (RPI) reach 7.5%! Many of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs base their annual price rises off the figure published in January, thus we now know how huge the hit will be.

Internet provider Plusnet has this week confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they will finally launch a new range of packages, which will be based off Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered broadband technology, at some point “later this year.” But it’s not the first time the UK ISP has promised to launch such products.

Support agents working for mobile operator EE (BT) have denied claims by some UK customers (here and here), and online news reports (here, here and here), that their mobile broadband (4G and 5G) network is intentionally blocking Apple’s iCloud linked ‘Private Relay‘ feature (such a block may clash with Net Neutrality rules).

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE (BT) have moved to mildly delay the planned reintroduction of EU roaming charges, which will eventually see most customers being charged £2 per day to use their UK allowances (calls, texts and data / mobile broadband) across related countries. Previously, you could do this at no extra cost.

Ofcom has published some of the first responses from UK broadband ISPs and internet content providers to their new review of Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or other online services by ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, vested interests split the pack.

The surge in UK inflation is threatening to result in one of the biggest annual price hikes in broadband ISP, phone, mobile and calling charges seen in years, which could hit customers of BT, EE, Plusnet, Vodafone, O2, TalkTalk, Shell Energy, KCOM and others with rises of around 9% come March-April 2022 (double the usual level).

Nintendo has won another injunction in the High Court, which forces most of the largest UK broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block two more websites that facilitated copyright infringement (internet piracy) by helping to distribute video games for the Switch console.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun to enforce a number of new consumer protection measures on mobile operators, which in practice means that they can no longer supply locked phones and are now limited to a maximum contract term of 24-months on bundles (mobile plans and handsets).
