The national telecoms regulator has today proposed a raft of “significant real-terms price reductions” for mobile operators, broadband ISPs, public sector organisations and businesses that buy BT’s high-speed wholesale Leased Line links, which form part of a market worth £2bn across the United Kingdom.

In a surprise move Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR2016) has done a U-turn on its 2012 policy by proposing that rival ISPs, specifically those that provide Leased Lines, should be granted access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network (i.e. un-lit fibre optic lines that have spare capacity for coping with future demand).

Sigh, it happened again, I was in the middle of streaming a movie over the home WiFi network while simultaneously making toast in the kitchen, and suddenly it stopped. The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website ad for ZyXEL’s PLA4201 500Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adaptor after two people complained that the performance claims were “misleading“, not least because the adapter itself only offered a 100Mbps (RJ-45) capable Ethernet port. Admittedly this isn’t strictly ISP related, but it’s still interesting.

BT has today confused fibre optic connection terminologies a little by detailing their first pilot for a “new form” of Fibre-to-the-Basement / Building (FTTB) broadband technology in the City of London area, which uses VDSL2 over copper like FTTC but is optimised for basements / comms rooms where the operator has a wayleave/permission from the landlord and access to power.

Rising costs and a lack of uptake have forced Dorset County Council to give up on their Dorset Public Sector Network (DPSN), which became operational via Kcom (KC) in 2012 and has since exceeded its budget by £340k. Another £200k per year could be added to this overspend until the agreement ends in 2018.

More are set to follow.

A team of scientists working at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has broken a new record after they were able to use a single laser to transmit data speeds of 43Tbps (Terabits per second) over a single fibre optic cable, which is important because this kind of setup is arguably reflective of a real-world environment.

Around 70+ businesses on the Cardiff Gate International Business Park in Wales can now gain access to top broadband speeds of 1000Mbps after Welsh ISP Spectrum Internet expanded the reach of their fibre optic network into the area by using the city’s Connection Voucher scheme, which makes this the first such park to benefit in the whole of Wales.
