BTOpenreach has announced its intention to recruit another 500 full-time broadband and telephone engineers, mostly in London, Surrey (England), Aberdeen (Scotland) and more generally around Wales. The move forms part of BT’s on-going efforts to meet Ofcom’s new quality of service requirements (faster fault fixing and installations etc.).

UK ISP WarwickNet has confirmed that around 100 businesses on the Binley Industrial Estate in Coventry (England) can now access their new superfast broadband network, which among other things offers leased-line speeds of up to 1Gbit/s; not to mention slower but cheaper FTTC services.

A team of scientists working at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has broken a new record after they were able to use a single laser to transmit data speeds of 43Tbps (Terabits per second) over a single fibre optic cable, which is important because this kind of setup is arguably reflective of a real-world environment.

Around 70+ businesses on the Cardiff Gate International Business Park in Wales can now gain access to top broadband speeds of 1000Mbps after Welsh ISP Spectrum Internet expanded the reach of their fibre optic network into the area by using the city’s Connection Voucher scheme, which makes this the first such park to benefit in the whole of Wales.

Ofcom has formally allowed BTOpenreach to proceed with their proposal to replace the sliding scale of Excess Construction Charges (ECC) on their point-to-point Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) products with a simple balancing charge fee of £548 +vat, which will benefit many but not all customers.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, confirms that the European Commission (EC) “did not raise any concerns” about its plans to slash the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses must pay to BT for 1Gbps+ wholesale Leased Line (Ethernet) services in all parts of the UK except Hull and London.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today issued a Draft Statement that formally notifies the European Commission (EC) of their proposal to cut the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses pay to BT for wholesale Leased Line services at speeds of above 1Gbps in all parts of the UK except London and Hull.

Bracknell-based ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has this week claimed to be the first UK provider to trial BT’s new FTTC based Etherway service, which combines the low cost of Fibre-to-the-Cabinet technology with the “simplicity, high reliability and performance” of Ethernet for a more affordable and faster business broadband product.

Ofcom has today proposed new controls that will “lead to [a] real-terms price reduction” of BTWholesale’s Leased Line services, which are used by businesses, mobile operators and broadband ISPs around the UK. The move is part of the regulators wider review (detailed here) into the country’s £2bn market for business telecoms.
