RETN Launch a New London to Brussels Fibre Network Route for Resilience

Eurasian focused network service provider RETN has today announced that they’ve launched a new London to Brussels “spectrum route” on fibre optic connectivity, which is intended to boost the resilience of their UK and Mainland Europe network through a more geographically diverse connection into continental Europe.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened investigations into several alternative full fibre broadband networks (altnets) – including Internetty, Cambridge Fibre Networks, Optical Fibre Infrastructure, Pine Media and Trooli – after they found “reasonable grounds to believe” that they may not be meeting their duties to show they have secured funds for meeting their liabilities.

The heavily indebted UK broadband focused TalkTalk Group has reportedly received bids for its wholesale arm, PlatformX Communications (PXC), which is said to value the company in the “hundreds of millions of pounds“. The interest is said to have come from Africa-focused Telecel, as well as others like private equity firm Epiris, which has teamed up with PXC executive chairman Tom O’Hagan.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that they will shortly reduce the Fixed Fee for Excess Construction Charges (ECC), which are sometimes charged when UK broadband or Ethernet deployments require extra civil engineering work. In addition, they’re also reducing the Connection Charges on Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines for businesses.

The UK telecoms and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has published a revised guidance document on network resilience, which was first published in 2024 (here) to give broadband, mobile and other digital network providers greater clarity on how they can “reduce the risk of network outages“. The new update clarifies their stance on power backup for mobile cell / mast sites.

Exponential-e Secures WAN Contract for Lincolnshire County Council in England

Business communications and broadband provider Exponential-e has been awarded a 5-year Wide Area Network (WAN) Services contract by Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) in England.
