The UK telecoms regulator has today published the outcome of their major Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which largely tweaks their existing approach to market regulation in order to help promote competition and investment in gigabit broadband (1000Mbps+) and business connectivity. But not everybody is going to be happy.

The FTTH Council Europe and IDATE have today previewed their 2026 ranking of the 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and coverage of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks. The data sees the UK pass 24.2 million homes (up by 2.79m in the year) with take-up of 48% (up from 37.1%). But coverage growth has slowed.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed some of the first results from their ongoing trial of a new technology (here), which harnesses the operator’s existing fibre optic broadband network to detect mains water leaks. In just three months, it’s already pinpointed 100+ leaks and is estimated to be saving 2 million litres of water a day.

The London Fibre Group has revealed that they’re seeking Code Powers to help them design, build, own and operate a new fibre optic network, including Dark Fibre and shared duct infrastructure, for use by other communications providers (wholesale) to expand their respective broadband and Ethernet networks across the United Kingdom.

The specialist broadband provider for the UK education market, Talk Straight (aka – Schools Broadband), has today announced that they’ve been chosen to deliver “high‑capacity Internet circuits” to Bristol City Council (BCC) in England – part of a new contract valued at up to £2.9 million.

At present most fixed broadband networks in the UK are focused on deploying 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based full fibre (FTTP) technology for retail ISPs, while less than a handful are playing with 50Gbps (50G-PON) technology (here, here and here) and CityFibre has talked about 100Gbps for the mid-2030s (here). But the next gen 200G PON technology is also making progress, and it’s a major shift.

The London Access Point (LONAP), which is a not-for-profit Layer 2 Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in London that was first established in 1997 and works with various different members (broadband ISPs, CDNs, mobile operators etc.), has just announced its new fees for 2026 and once again moved to reduce their port fees.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media O2 Business (VMO2) has completed the Dark Fibre Network East project as part of the Swansea Bay City Region project (Digital Infrastructure Programme), which is said to have delivered a secure fibre network linking 36 public-sector sites (e.g. council offices, NHS, doctors, schools etc.) through 46 connections in Llanelli, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.

Alternative network operator Elevate, which back in April 2025 won the contract to build a new “hyperfast” full fibre broadband network in the Merseyside (England) town of St Helens (here), has today confirmed that they’ve completed the roll-out in the town centre – paving the way for local residents and businesses to get faster internet speeds and better reliability.

A relatively new telecoms company called Boom Telecom Networks has revealed that it’s planning to build and operate a UK broadband network, which would be a Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) and Gigabit Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) hybrid, although the details are currently quite limited.

Australian investment group Macquarie Asset Management has acquired Infracapital’s 50% stake in the Last Mile Infrastructure Group, which gives it 100% control of the multi-utility infrastructure group that designs, builds, owns and manages more than 930,000 “connections” across Great Britain (including electricity, gas, water, wastewater and fibre optic broadband etc.).

The UK Space Agency has today awarded contracts to three companies to investigate the possibility of producing advanced materials in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which includes one project (SkyYield) that aims to design a payload to process ZBLAN fluoride glass in microgravity (i.e. a specialist optical fibre that can transmit light with up to 100 times less signal loss than traditional silica fibre).

The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange (LINX), which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900+ members (broadband ISPs, mobile and CDN providers etc.), has revealed that last week’s UEFA Champions League, European League and Conference League games drove a new global internet traffic peak of over 12.069Tbps across the UK, US, Africa and Middle East.
