Cityfibre has today issued an update on their project to upgrade their entire UK G-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to harness 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology (here), which reveals that they’ve successfully completed a trial of 2Gbps home broadband speeds in York with ISP partner Vodafone.

A new alternative network (altnet) builder called Meliora Networks Limited has emerged on to the scene with a plan to rollout a hybrid Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and gigabit-capable Full Fibre broadband network, which will focus on “areas of the UK that do not presently have access to next generation connectivity.”

Scotland-based UK business broadband ISP Commsworld has reached a new agreement with Northumberland County Council in England, which will see them take responsibility for rolling out a new gigabit-capable full fibre network to connect 110 schools in the county.

Shetland Telecom, which is the arms-length network operator that was originally set up by the Shetland Islands Council (Scotland) to develop local fibre optic infrastructure, is facing a review by the local authority after councillors found that the company lacked a clear strategy and could potentially do more to improve broadband.

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) in England has secured £1.55m of public funding from the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit programme in order to help it connect 43 public sectors sites (e.g. schools, council offices etc.) in rural areas to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband and Ethernet network.

The Full Fibre Northern Ireland (FFNI) Consortium, which is made up of 10 councils outside Belfast and the Business Services Organisation (BSO), has confirmed the completion of their project to rollout a new full fibre broadband network to connect 887 public sector sites. The network itself was built by UK ISP Fibrus.

The Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA), which is a partnership of seven neighbouring councils, has announced a new project that will aim to build a 10km long stretch of an “open access” full fibre broadband network between the Thurrock and Brentwood areas.
