The ITS Technology Group, which runs 36 wholesale full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks (aka – “Faster Britain“) across urban parts of the United Kingdom for businesses and ISPs, has today confirmed it will not introduce price increases to any existing contracts or new on-net sales in 2023. But that’s not all.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) in England has been chosen to lead a new £8m “GigaHubs” project that will rollout a gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to reach a total of more than 350 public buildings (schools, council offices, hospitals etc.) across the Midlands.

UK ISP BT and the West London Alliance (WLA), which represents the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Harrow and Hillingdon, have today announced a new £3.9 million partnership that aims to provide up to 15,000 “homes, schools and businesses with access to ultra-fast broadband” using full fibre technology.

Neos Networks has announced that their ongoing project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc.) across Oxfordshire (England), many of which are in rural areas, is “on track” to complete by the end of 2023 – some 90 sites have already been reached.

The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley (Buckinghamshire, England) is to open a new Gallery Exhibition on 11th March 2023 – ‘Flowers to Fibre’, which as the name suggests will aim to tell the “hidden story” of Britain’s telecommunications journey all the way through the copper and fibre optic broadband age.

A recent YouGov survey of 2,033 UK adults, which was commissioned by Point Topic and conducted online during November 2022, has revealed that 35.5% of respondents were still unsure as to whether their home broadband ISP connections were based off “full fibre” (FTTP/B/H) technology or not.

Business broadband ISP Commsworld has signed yet another agreement with Northumberland County Council in England, which is worth £22m and will see them replace the council’s ageing Wide Area Network (WAN) with modern full-fibre infrastructure. Local businesses and homes could also see improved connectivity.

A new £2m Joint Venture involving broadband operator ITS Technology Group and DG Cities, an innovation company owned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich Council, has been established today to help commercialise a 21km long gigabit-capable full fibre network around the London borough of Greenwich – serving homes and businesses.

Back in early 2022 we reported on the impact of major data centre closures to UK full fibre broadband ISPs and other operators, which included mention of Equinix‘s plan to close their MA2 IBX data centre in Manchester by June 2023 (here). The good news today is that Lunar Digital has saved the data centre from its fate.

Network operator Neos Networks has today been named as the preferred bidder for Network Rail’s Project Reach, which among other things could see them invest in the design and build of a new trackside fibre optic communications network. This could also help to improve UK gigabit broadband and 5G mobile coverage.

Civil engineering firm Light Source, which works with a number of UK operators to deploy Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP infrastructure (e.g. Upp, Netomnia, Virgin Media, Airband and KCOM), appears to be experiencing problems after engineers reported being laid off and a manager said they had “entered administration“.

Cityfibre has today issued an update on their project to upgrade their entire UK G-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to harness 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology (here), which reveals that they’ve successfully completed a trial of 2Gbps home broadband speeds in York with ISP partner Vodafone.

A new alternative network (altnet) builder called Meliora Networks Limited has emerged on to the scene with a plan to rollout a hybrid Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and gigabit-capable Full Fibre broadband network, which will focus on “areas of the UK that do not presently have access to next generation connectivity.”
