After a period of uncertainty the community owned co-operative Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which hopes to build a new fibre optic (FTTP) based superfast broadband (50-100Mbps) network in rural parts of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England), might finally be back on track thanks to an offer of £382,500 in public funding.

Telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent appears, perhaps to the dismay of fibre optic campaigners, to have given the traditional copper telephone line a new lease of life after its Bell Labs research division claimed to set a new world record by delivering “ultra-broadband” speeds of 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) over the aging infrastructure using a prototype technology called XG-FAST (G.fast2?).

The latest Q1-2014 global broadband report from UK telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that the world is now home to 690.1 million fixed line broadband subscribers (+1.9% in the quarter), which is up from +0.4% recorded at the end of 2013. It’s also the first quarter where the market share for older copper line broadband connections (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) has dipped below 50%.

According to ComReg, the Irish telecoms regulator, 43% of fixed broadband customers in Ireland receive sub-10Mbps speeds. But all that could change after Vodafone teamed up in a 50:50 Joint Venture with state-owned electricity firm ESB to splash €450m (£358m) on a nationwide roll-out of 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) technology. We can only hope they do the same here.

Rural-focused fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP Gigaclear has secured private investment worth £7.75 million to help fund the next phase of its growth and a roll-out of 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Internet access into more areas, which could reach 15,000 premises by the end of 2015 and go much further in the future.

Business ISP Metronet UK, which is based in Manchester (England) and runs a carrier-grade hybrid superfast fibre optic and wireless broadband network, has announced plans for a further geographic expansion of its network after the management team completed a £45m secondary buyout of the business with support from ISIS Equity Partners.

BT, as part of the wider Digital Scotland project, has started laying the first batch of 20 new submarine fibre optic cables (400 kms in total) around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region. The work involves a special cable-laying ship and is being supported by Global Marine Systems, Orange Marine and A-2-Sea Solutions.

The latest update from JT Global (Jersey Telecom) has revealed that 8,479 customers have now subscribed to the operators 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network on Jersey (Channel Islands), which is up from 7,600 in March 2014.

Fibre optic infrastructure developer CityFibre have signed a strategic partnership with Coventry City Council in England, which has enabled the firm to acquire Coventry’s 140km metro fibre network (Coventry CORE). The network will now be upgraded and extended in order to make broadband speeds of 1000Mbps available to local businesses.
