A new report reveals how several companies are responding to the growing problem of deliberate sabotage against vital subsea fibre optic cables, which carry much of the world’s internet data traffic, by turning those same cables into a sophisticated sensor net capable of detecting when, where and how an attack may be occurring.

The ITS Technology Group, which has deployed various open access full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks (“Faster Britain“) across urban parts of the UK for businesses and ISPs, has revealed that their £7.5m (state aid) project to deploy a new 280km long full fibre network in South Essex (England) has now connected 250 public sector sites and covered 9,000 businesses.

The Digital Greenwich Connect (DGC) project, which is as Joint Venture (JT) between DG Cities, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Innovation Company, and full fibre broadband provider ITS Technology, has today announced the next phase of their network expansion, which will now cover both Woolwich and Eltham town centre.

The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange (LINX), which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900 members (broadband ISPs, mobile operators etc.), has today announced that their regional internet exchange in Manchester has hit a new “record maximum traffic peak” of 725Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Corby-based internet service provider Rocket Fibre has revealed that they’re looking to expand their existing roll-out of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband network. The operator currently holds an “initial ambition” of being able to cover 21,000 “customers” in Northamptonshire (England) with the new network.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the results of a recent study it conducted into the costs of improving power resilience at UK mobile network sites (masts etc.). This finds that the cost of ensuring “almost everybody” could maintain access to the emergency services for up to 4 hours, in the event of a power cut, would be approx. £1bn.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has today appointed Neos Networks to lead their £1.2m D2N2 Gigahubs project, which will work alongside Openreach (BT) and Netomnia to deploy a new full fibre gigabit broadband network to connect “up to” 28 public buildings (schools, NHS sites etc.) across rural parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

A new research note from analyst firm Enders Analysis has warned that mergers between smaller alternative gigabit broadband networks, such as the one that occurred on Monday between FullFibre Limited and Zzoomm (here), will not be enough for the sector to become “sustainable” and “further financial distress may be required” for some realism over valuations.

The City of London Police (CoLP) have arrested a 29-year-old man after a climate protest group claimed to have “[disrupted] the wifi systems of hundreds of insurance companies across the UK“, which they achieved by cutting key fibre optic cables in London (similar events are also said to have occurred in Leeds, Birmingham and Sheffield).

The London Access Point (LONAP), which is a not-for-profit Layer 2 Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in London that was first established in 1997 and works with various different members (broadband ISPs, CDNs, mobile operators etc.), appears to have responded to recent price cuts at LINX (here) by refreshing some of its own fees.

London-registered network operator EXA Infrastructure, which was acquired by investment firm ‘I Squared Capital’ in 2021, has today announced that they’ve signed binding agreements to acquire specialist connectivity services provider Aqua Comms, which operates a number of transatlantic and intra-European subsea infrastructure systems (fibre optic cables).
