The shortlist for the fourth annual UK Fibre Awards event, which is due to take place next month (5th June 2025) at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel, has recently been released. The event sees various broadband ISPs and full fibre network builders across several categories pick up awards for their achievements.

Business focused UK ISP, IT and Communications provider OneTek (One Tek Business Solutions), which typically provides leased lines, direct fibre connections, and point-to-point (P2P) antennas, has revealed that they intend to deploy a new full fibre network that will initially focus on providing B2B connectivity in the West Cheshire Business Estate area.

In a not unexpected development, network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) – itself owned by the Welsh Government (WG), has applied for Code Powers from Ofcom in order to boost their plans for a full fibre broadband network that runs alongside local railways.

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks, which is perhaps best known for helping to build a number of open access UK mobile and fibre networks, has been picked by Kingston Council (Kingston upon Thames) in London to build a new 10km long fibre (broadband, Ethernet etc.) network in the royal borough. Virgin Media’s business division will also be involved.

Business focused UK ISP and Managed Service Provider (MSP) Connectus has today announced that they’re investing a further £500,000 into the Doncaster Airport Business Park in South Yorkshire (England), which is on top of the £1m they previously put in to help ensure all businesses on the park could enjoy access to their gigabit full fibre (broadband and Ethernet) network.

The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange, which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900 members (broadband ISPs, mobile and CDN providers etc.), has revealed that their LON2 network (interconnection platform) is nearing a key milestone of 1Tbps (Terabits per second) of peak network traffic and with a full technology refresh planned for later this year.

Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge claim to have demonstrated the UK’s “first long-distance ultra-secure transfer of data over a quantum communications network” using “standard [single-mode] fibre optic infrastructure“. The test successfully transmitted a live quantum-secured video call over a distance of 410km (between Bristol and Cambridge).

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which offers an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has said that Northern Ireland’s underground pipes and cables will be “safer than ever before” after Virgin Media (O2) and Mutual Energy joined their platform.

Alternative network operator Elevate (formerly Telcom and Luminet) has today announced that they’ve completed the deployment of a new full fibre “Hypercity” network across the city of Cardiff in Wales. The new network gives over 5,000 businesses access to dedicated internet speeds up to 10Gbps and over 4,000 homes access to speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Network operator Elevate (formerly Telcom and Luminet) has today announced that they’ve secured a new contract to build a “hyperfast” full fibre internet network in the large Merseyside (england) town of St Helens, which is home to a population of around 120,000.

The enterprise division of Hull-based broadband ISP KCOM, which has spent the past few years deploying a new full fibre (FTTP) network across 305,000 premises in parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has today been appointed to a new public sector YPO procurement framework for Connectivity and Telecommunications Services.

The UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) has today committed to invest £45 million into improving internet connectivity and further plans to make digital standards a requirement for all schools across the country, which includes fibre broadband upgrades for 833 schools. The goal is to help close the remaining digital divide.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their proposals for the new Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which it hopes will help to “promote competition and investment” in gigabit broadband and business connectivity. Broadly speaking, the regulator will be updating and tweaking their existing approach, with few radical changes this time around.

The FTTH Council Europe has just published their 2025 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and coverage of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks. This sees the UK pass 21.4 million homes (up by 4.2m in the year) with take-up of 37.1% and a prediction that it’ll cover 31m by 2030. But growth has slowed a bit.
