It might have taken the best part of a year to design but the Bath & North East Somerset Council, which in 2011 briefly rejected funding from the Broadband Delivery UK project (here), appears to have finally put together a plan for deploying superfast broadband and opening access to the public fibre optic network.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published its annual State of Broadband Report 2013, which found that superfast fibre optic (FTTH) and hybrid fibre (FTTC) style services were continuing to cannibalise copper (ADSL) connections and that the UK had improved to be ranked 10th in the world for fixed line broadband penetration (up from 12th).

Cumbria-based ISP LonsdaleNET in England, which last year launched a new superfast wireless broadband network in the Eden Valley and surrounding areas, claims to have deployed a new 1000Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP) network to the tiny rural hamlet (civil parish) village of Melkinthorpe in the same region.

CityFibre, which in 2011 completed the construction of a new 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable and 103km long fibre optic ring network in the English city of York (The York CORE), has claimed that BT might be attempting to disrupt their infrastructure by threatening to challenge its use through the European courts. But BT states there’s “no truth” to the claim.

Arqiva, which currently provides much of the infrastructure behind TV, radio, satellite and mobile communications in the United Kingdom, has received a significant capacity boost after ISP Virgin Media Business completed the build of new fibre optic network to link all 40 of its sites across the country.

London-based ISP Hyperoptic has confirmed that they still expect to start deployment of a “hyper-sonic” 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTH/B) service as many as 10 new UK cities by the end of 2013  2014 when they hope to reach 80,000 homes.

Cheshire-based ISP Vispa has finally completed the installation of a new fibre optic capacity link from BT, which has been in the planning stages since earlier this year (here) when capacity problems contributed to some performance woes on their City Wireless network and later caused new installations to be suspended.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today published a new report on broadband coverage across the United Kingdom, which predicts that superfast (30Mbps+) availability could hit 90.8% by the end of 2015. ISPreview.co.uk has also been able to obtain an exclusive map that splits the presence of fibre FTTx and cable (DOCSIS) networks.

A new study has claimed that Europe will fail to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP speeds available to 100% of households by 2020. But it will achieve 90% coverage and most of that will be due to the mass adoption of hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC and cable) technologies that combine fibre optic with existing copper or coax cables.

Broadband connectivity on Shetland might be gradually improving, thanks to a new undersea fibre optic link and investment, but many residents of the smaller surrounding islands (Yell, Unst and Fetlar) continue to suffer from slow connectivity (sub-1Mbps) and BT has yet to clarify its commitment. The solution could be a new community initiative.
