BT and BDUK Help First Norfolk UK Areas Go Live with Superfast Broadband

The £41 million state aid supported scheme to roll-out BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) ISP network to more than 80% of Norfolk’s (England) premises by the end of 2015 has confirmed that the first communities are now live and more will soon follow.

UK Map Shows Consumer Superfast Broadband Uptake Hits 20%

The latest map from Point Topic has revealed that uptake of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) based internet connections in the United Kingdom has now reached 20% (Q1-2013), which is largely thanks to Virgin Media’s effort to double its customers speeds and thus lift several million consumers into the same area of performance.

UPD Ofcom to Cut the Price of UK Fibre Superfast Broadband ISP Migrations

The national UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation that proposes to boost competition for superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services by cutting the wholesale cost of switching between ISPs on BT’s network to £10-£15 and slashing contract lengths for migrations to just 1 month. BTOpenreach will also face stiffer rules.

BT Bring FTTC and FTTP to 2.7M UK Apartments and High Rise Buildings

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK telecoms network, has revealed that 2.7 Million apartments (Multi Dwelling Units) or high rise buildings around the United Kingdom can now access its superfast broadband service (i.e. up to 80Mbps FTTC or 330Mbps capable FTTP). But 550k more will soon follow.

The governments notoriously complicated and confusing Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which is responsible for taxing the rateable value of the basic infrastructure, has hinted that its next rate card update in 2015 could reduce the tax on rural fibre optic broadband lines for smaller (altnet) ISPs. Spectrum Internet Deploy Own Fibre Broadband to 700 Homes in Rural Wales

Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet has announced that the rollout of its own Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband (30Mbps+) network in South Wales has now passed more than 700 homes around the Gower (Swansea) telephone exchange area and for two villages in Monmouthshire.

BTOpenreach has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the first trial of its new VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology in the United Kingdom, which could help ISPs to deliver better FTTC broadband speeds over longer copper lines, is now set to begin at the end of July or early August 2013.

The latest Point Topic report for Q1-2013 reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers has grown by 2% (12.5 million) in the quarter to hit 654,600,000 (up from 643.7m in Q4-2012), which remains fairly flat but continues to be fuelled by the rollout of new superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) connectivity.
