Last week Vodafone blamed a significant bank holiday weekend fall in peak time fixed broadband speeds (here) on “human error when carrying out some routine maintenance work.” Unfortunately a similarly dramatic drop in speeds occurred on Sunday evening and the complaints soon piled up.

The North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) has revealed that it could spend the £1m grant awarded to it in June 2019 by DEFRA’s Rural Broadband Infrastructure (RBI) scheme on extending “superfast broadband” connectivity around rural industrial estates on the edge of Scunthorpe.

The state aid supported Superfast Dorset (SFD) project, which has so far worked with Openreach (BT) to extend the reach of FTTC/P “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 97%+ of the county (including Poole and Bournemouth), has proposed a £5m extension to its existing Phase 3 contract.

Welsh ISP Spectrum Internet has informed that, in-between appointing some new executives, they have now made their Openreach (BT) based FTTC and FTTP broadband packages available to order across the United Kingdom (availability allowing). Previously these were only offered to parts of South West England and Wales.

The on-going delay to the Scottish Government’s proposed £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which originally aimed to cover the whole of Scotland with 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” by the end of 2021, has now stalled the digital element of the proposed Inverness and Highland City-Region deal.

Not for the first time, customers of Vodafone’s fixed line broadband service (seemingly both FTTC and FTTH) seem to complaining about a significant drop in service speeds and a rise in packet loss during peak times over the past few days. The reports appear to echo the network congestion issues that plagued the ISP last year.

Budget ISP TalkTalk appears to have responded to Vodafone’s recent promotion by discounting the cost of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “Faster Fibre with Speed Boost” (67Mbps average) broadband and phone bundle to just £23.50 per month. Confusingly this makes it the same price as their slower 38Mbps plan.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that their new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA / SOGFast) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line from an ISP without the voice (phone) service, has now entered Early Market Deployment and published revised prices.

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire (BBO) partnership, which has worked with Openreach (BT) and Building Digital UK to extend the reach of FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to pass 97% of local premises, has just launched a new coverage map tool.

Macquarie Infrastructure (MIRA / MEIF 6 Fibre) has today confirmed that they’ve finalised their £627m acquisition of Hull and East Riding’s (East Yorkshire) incumbent broadband ISP KCOM. The new owner intends to expand the provider’s “full fibre” (FTTP) network, hopefully starting with the c.9,000 that have been missed.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today launched their new triple-play “Together” bundle, which combines a fixed line phone service with unlimited home broadband (FTTC / VDSL2) and 5G based mobile broadband data into a single package from £31 per month. You also get the same router as their FTTH packages.

The Leicestershire County Council has today announced a £2.7 million extension to their existing Superfast Leicestershire project with Openreach (BT), which means that “thousands” of extra homes and businesses will soon gain access to a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP network.

The MSP for Orkney, Liam McArthur (LibDem), has called on the Scottish Government’s Connectivity Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, to come clean with regards to whether or not they have now “quietly abandoned” the target to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) available to all of Scotland by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial).

Openreach (BT) appears to be running a 6 month special offer for UK ISPs using Managed Engineer Installs for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband service, which will start on 10th September 2019 and run until 10th March 2020.

Customers looking to join the UK broadband ISP division of John Lewis are being offered a free Google Home Hub AI smart speaker. On top of that they’ve also introduced a bigger discount on their FTTC based superfast broadband and phone packages, which lasts for the first 12 months of service.

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

The £22m+ state aid fuelled Connecting Cheshire project has finally completed Phase 2 of their contract with Openreach (BT) to rollout a “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network – FTTC (VDSL2) and a little FTTP – to cover 95% of local premises (100,000 additional premises), albeit 7 months later than planned.
