The Government’s Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has today uploaded a batch of reports and case studies that are designed to provide help and information for anybody looking to establish their own community broadband solutions.

A new report from Ovum, which was jointly commissioned by BT and Australia’s nbn, has forecast that some 29 million subscribers will be using a G.fast based ultrafast broadband connection by 2021 (3% of the global fixed broadband market) and most of those will be in Western Europe.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project has released its latest Q2 2016 take-up data for the state aid supported roll-out of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which shows that many local authorities are seeing 30% adoption of the new service and that will help reinvestment.

Openreach (BT) has announced some enhancements and an extension of their new 18Mbps (2Mbps upload) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based product trial, which began in July 2016 (here) and is designed to help people stuck on slow ADSL based pure copper broadband lines.

KCOM has today announced the next roll-out phase for their “ultrafast” Lightstream fibre optic (FTTP/C) broadband network in Hull (East Yorkshire), which reflects the next 6 months of deployment from now until March 2017; this will add an additional 25,000 premises passed to the total.

BT has said that the Government can avoid imposing a tricky industry levy on ISPs or using public funding to help pay for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) because they’ll take the full responsibility, as well as pushing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 97-98% of the UK.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a series of adverts for BT’s Infinity “fibre broadband” (FTTC) services, including a major TV campaign featuring actor Ryan Reynolds, after Virgin Media complained that it had made “misleading” claims about service speed.

The European Commission has published a new Analysys Mason study that examines the cost of, among other things, providing 1Gbps capable fixed line broadband connections to all residential areas across the 28 EU member states, which for now still includes the United Kingdom.

Until the end of this month Plusnet are offering their ‘up to’ 76Mbps Unlimited Fibre Extra (FTTC) broadband service at just £5 a month for the first 6 months of service (£19.99 thereafter), although you still have to add £17.99 a month for line rental on top (or the equivalent of £15.49 when pre-paid).

Good news for anybody likely to be taking part in Openreach’s (BT) forthcoming trial of the new “Long Reach VDSL” (FTTC) broadband technology, you can expect to receive the service free for up to 2 years. Plus there’s an indication that the top download speed might be boosted up to 55Mbps.

Good news for East Yorkshire. KCOM’s on-going deployment of their new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) dominated “Lightstream” broadband network in Hull has now reached 100,000 local homes and businesses (premises passed), which is up sharply from 78,000 in May 2016.

UK ISP Zen Internet has announced that the reach of their “next generation” consumer broadband and high-capacity data network (e.g. Ethernet, FTTC, FTTP, EFM and ADSL) will be extended to 400 Points of Presence (PoPs) in BT exchanges by January 2017 (reaching over 500,000 postcodes).

UK ISP BT has launched what they’re calling the “Fabulous Fortnight” sale, which essentially combines a price cut of their unlimited broadband and phone packages with the offer of an included Reward Card (Mastercard) worth £50 or £100 (usually the provider prefers to rotate these aspects separately).

The CEO of Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, has today given a progress update on their plans to improve national broadband connectivity. Among other things this included improvements to their FTTP roll-out for new build homes, a list of trial locations for the 10Mbps USO focused LR-VDSL technology and a huge extension of their G.fast pilot to 138,000 UK premises.

Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet, which builds some of its own network and unbundles a few BT exchanges, has released a new range of broadband packages for businesses within its Wales and South West England network. It’s also one of the only ones to offer Fibre-on-Demand (FoD).

Few things are more frustrating than finding out that you can’t get the latest 40-80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband service installed because the local Openreach (BT) Street Cabinet is full to capacity, which can sometimes result in a lengthy wait for an upgrade.

The Scottish Government has finally begun the formal process of setting out a plan for reaching its goal of 100% “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage by 2021, which will aim to reach an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 premises that are unlikely to benefit from their existing strategy.
