UPDATE Superfast Broadband Delivery UK Rollout Reaches 1.5m Premises

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connections available to 95% of people in the United Kingdom by 2017, has now helped more than 1.5 million homes and businesses to gain access to the service (up by +500K since August 2014). Superfast connections can now allegedly be taken by 80% of the UK.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again ruled that it’s perfectly fine for ISPs to describe hybrid-fibre broadband connections, such as those based off BT’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology, to describe such services as “fibre optic” even though they can also involve a significant amount of slower copper cable.

The Court of Appeal has this morning ruled that two patents owned by California-based ISP ASSIA, which relates to the field of Dynamic Spectrum Management, have been infringed upon by BT’s Next Generation Access (NGA) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / BTInfinity) superfast broadband technology.

UK ISP TalkTalk Grows to 4.22m Broadband Users as York FTTP Build Starts

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has published their latest Q3-2014 (calendar) results, which saw broadband subscribers increase by +15,000 in the quarter to total 4,221,000 (up from +10k in Q2 and the same in Q1). Meanwhile the joint roll-out of their 1Gbps capable FTTP broadband network in York has finally started the build phase. A new Talk2Go app for iOS and Android is also out (i.e. mobile calls over a fixed line).

BT “Fibre Broadband” Expands to 150,000 Extra Premises in Scotland

The £410 million Digital Scotland project has confirmed that 150,000 additional homes and businesses across the country can now gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network thanks to the state aid supported scheme, which aims to cover 85% of Scottish premises by the end of 2015 and 95% by the end of 2017.

Superfast Wales Expands “Fibre Broadband” to 276,000 Extra Premises

The state aid supported £425m Superfast Cymru project, which is working with BT to make faster “fibre broadband” (predominantly FTTC and some FTTP) connectivity available to 96% of premises in Wales by the end of spring 2016, has so far helped to reach an additional 276,320 homes and businesses.

HALIFAX – UK Homes with Slow Broadband Attract Lower Prices SHOCK

The latest survey of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom by Halifax, which queried what kind of impact broadband connectivity would have on house buying, found that 23% would attempt to negotiate a lower price if the property had a poor broadband connection, while 20% would pay more for a home with “good broadband” and 18% said broadband had been merely a consideration during past moves.

The £27.35 million Superfast Staffordshire project in the West Midlands (England) has now helped around 13,000 local homes and businesses (mostly in Rugeley) to gain access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and its future deployment focus is now slowly switching towards the sensitive rural Moorlands (e.g. Peak District).
