Last month saw Hull-based UK ISP KCOM unveil a new £100m project to extend the coverage of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into new parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (here and here). This week the provider has connected their first customer in Driffield to the new network.

The Government’s new 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband is due to start next month, although for some ISPs Ofcom’s approach to eligibility has created a few puzzled faces. As a result some people may live in areas covered by a 1Gbps FTTH ISP, yet still be able to request the USO.

Fibre optic UK broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which last year secured €30m from European investors (here) and extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 10,000 homes and businesses (mostly in Kent and Hampshire), has today gained a further £5m of funding via a senior facility agreement with NatWest Bank.

A small but important update has just been issued, which confirms that UK rural “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear has reached a settlement with the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project. As part of that the provider will continue a commitment to complete the work in areas that were started under the former contracts.

The Northumberland County Council in England appears to be proposing a new plan to the UK Government, which – if funding can be secured – would see the local authority using their own skills and resources to help dig new “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks into remote rural communities (inc. installations direct to homes).

After a long wait our sources inform us that Sky Broadband (Comcast) are imminently due to add support for Openreach’s (BT) national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to their range of both “superfast” and “ultrafast” packages, which looks increasingly likely to go live later this month (provided some issues can be ironed out first).

Mobile giant and UK ISP Vodafone has published their latest quarterly results to the end of December 2019 (financial Q3 19/20), which saw them add +20,000 fixed broadband customers to total 687,000 (down from +61k added in the previous quarter) and mobile customers jumped to total 18,056,000 (up by +250k)

City focused full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic has conducted a new survey of 228 housing professionals and 2,000 UK homeowners or renters, which unsurprisingly reveals that most respondents now consider good broadband connectivity to be the “4th utility” alongside water, gas and electricity.

Cityfibre’s £100m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk to follow later), has finally started to go live and connect their first customers.

UK ISP Giganet today appears to have become one of the first providers to reveal how much they will charge at retail for Openreach’s new 550Mbps and 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers, which are due to go live from 23rd March 2020. But there’s a catch.. the pricing is currently only for homes in Salisbury.

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre, which has a £4bn ambition to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 8 million UK homes and businesses, has revealed that their deployment to the Dorset city of Bournemouth will be extended into Poole and Christchurch “as soon as possible.”

UK ISP TalkTalk has today reported their first trading update (Q3 FY2020 financial) since they agreed to sell their full fibre FibreNation network to Cityfibre for £200m (here). The provider, which is home to 4.3 million broadband customers, added 148k new FTTC/P customers in the quarter (down from 174k in Q2 FY20).

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has completed their community driven project to roll-out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 12 rural villages in the Test and Dun Valleys of Hampshire and Wiltshire, which since starting in 2018 (here) has now covered a total of 4,000 local homes and businesses.

The BT Group’s results for Q3 2019/20 (financial) have revealed that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 4.88 million UK premises (up from 4.2m last quarter), which includes 2.156m on FTTP (up from 1.81m) and 2.725m on G.fast (up from 2.42m). But the Gov’s Huawei decision will cost £500m!

The UK FibreNation project, which is currently being acquired by Cityfibre from TalkTalk for £200m (here), has today announced that they’ve started to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to 50,000 premises across the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

Ofcom has today implemented softer rules to support Openreach’s (BT) IP (VoIP) and FTTP UK migration trials in Salisbury and Mildenhall (here), which aim to test the processes for moving customers off older copper broadband ISP and telephone services. Discounts and a new bulk migration process are part of the changes.
