Good news. After months of preparation Zzoomm, which is a new ISP that aspires to cover 1 million UK homes with a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2024 (here), has this week started to build their first network in the Oxfordshire town of Henley-on-Thames.

Fixed wireless access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland with speeds of up to 35Mbps, has appointed a new Financial Director – Jennifer Nicoll – and moved into a bigger office. All of this comes ahead of a possible network expansion.

The FibreNation (TalkTalk sibling) company, which hopes to deploy a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover 3 million UK premises (if it can find enough investment – about £1.5bn), has today appointed Darren Woods as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Belinda Fearnley as its Head of HR.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone, has announced that their £10m rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network in the Scottish city of Stirling and Bridge of Allan area has now “completed more than half of its build programme.”

London-focused UK broadband ISP Community Fibre has signed a new agreement with Croydon Council, which will enable their Gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach an additional 11,000 social homes across the borough. Openreach (BT) has also reached a similar access agreement.

Alternative network UK ISP County Broadband, which last year raised £46 million in investment to help it roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England region, has today begun the next phase of their build to cover 30 additional villages.

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT (Jersey Telecom), which recently deployed a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover the English Channel Island of Jersey, is celebrating today after being short-listed in two categories as part of the World Communication Awards 2019.

Reports this morning claim that BT (Openreach) are in “secret” negotiations with the government and UK ISPs about a new six point plan, which could see the last of their old copper phone lines being switched off by 2027 and replaced by “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband. Provided everybody agrees of course.

New full fibre ISP Fibrus, which last year said it planned to invest £100m+ over the next 5 years in order to build a new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across part of Northern Ireland (here), has today officially begun their rollout in Dundrum (County Down).

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) has made no secret of their desire to work with “full fibre” (FTTH) alternative network (altnet) providers (here) and, in keeping with that, they’ve today agreed a new wholesale access deal with the Brookfield Utilities UK Group (GTC / OFNL), which builds fibre optic networks to UK new build homes.

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) will today publish the outcome of their inquiry into the rural challenges of gaining access to superfast broadband, 4G mobile networks and accessing digital-only services across the United Kingdom, which identifies a number of problems with the Government’s strategy.

Ofcom has published a Summer 2019 update to their Connected Nations report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) UK broadband coverage has risen to 8% (up from 7% four months ago) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ has declined from 619,000 to 578,000. Geographic 4G mobile cover remains at 66%.

Andrew Glover, Chair of the UK ISPA, has told ISPreview in a new interview that a no-deal Brexit could harm both the industry’s supply chain and access to a skilled workforce. Glover also warns that DNS over HTTPS (DoH) raises a “host of security concerns” and says “considerable regulatory change” is needed to hit full fibre targets.

Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).

A new piece of research from Oxera, which was commissioned by the Broadband Stakeholder Group think-tank, has helped to highlight some of the benefits (better employment, increased economic activity etc.) that UK Local Authorities could expect if they help to rollout 5G mobile and “full fibre” broadband.
