In yet another major upset the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has today taken the decision to end their contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear, which last year suffered significant delays that set some parts of their rollout back by around 2 years. Sadly efforts to agree a revised plan were not successful.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has announced that the CEO of their sibling business connectivity focused ISP Entanet, Elsa Chen, has been appointed to the new role of Chief Customer Officer. Elsa will now be responsible for CF’s end-to-end customer experience strategy across all market verticals.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear UK, which is working to rollout a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Berkshire, appears to have suffered another local setback after Network Rail refused permission to run optical cable over one of their bridges near Binfield.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has reached a new access agreement (wayleave) with several housing associations in Scotland, which means that residents of social homes in two Scottish cities – Aberdeen and Stirling – may soon be able to access a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network.

Cable and full fibre broadband ISP WightFibre, which serves homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire, England), has entered into a new partnership that enables them to supply a TV service based off the netgem.tv video streaming and set-top-box platform.

The Kent County Council in England has confirmed that 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband from Openreach (BT) is set to reach an additional 5,000 rural premises. On top of that they’ve boosted the value of the UK Government’s rural Gigabit broadband vouchers from £1,500 to £2,500 per household.

Portsmouth-based UK ISP toob, which was setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and has attracted investment of £75m (here), is officially starting the rollout of their 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Southampton, despite Virgin Media’s threat to “keep them out of our city.”

Full fibre UK broadband ISPs Hyperoptic and Gigaclear have once again made it into the Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 for 2019, which is a league table of Britain’s top 100 private technology companies with the fastest-growing sales over the latest 3 years. But they have both fallen in rank.

UK ISP G.Network, which between 2017 and 2018 hoovered up £65m of private investment (here) to support their ambition for rolling out FTTP “ultra-fast broadband” to 120,000 premises across parts of London, has spent most of 2019 on the initial build of their network and the first homes have already gone live.

The Party of Wales (Plaid Cymru) appears to expecting a general election soon as they’ve recently set out a new – if somewhat familiar – three-point plan, which primarily aims to “eradicate Wales of broadband not-spots by 2025.” Sadly they neglect to define what “broadband” means, in terms of either speed or technology.

At the end of July the UK Government announced that part of their new £3.6bn Towns Fund would go toward supporting an initial 100 towns “so that they will get the improved transport and improved broadband connectivity that they need” (here). The names of those towns, which includes a few cities, have today been published.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today signed a new strategic supplier agreement with Cubis (CRH Group), which will see them supply the UK operator with access chambers, covers and cable management systems to aid their FTTP broadband deployments until December 2020.

Last week Vodafone blamed a significant bank holiday weekend fall in peak time fixed broadband speeds (here) on “human error when carrying out some routine maintenance work.” Unfortunately a similarly dramatic drop in speeds occurred on Sunday evening and the complaints soon piled up.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk appears to be having some success in courting interest from investors in their sibling wholesale FibreNation company, which proposes to build a 1000Mbps “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network to cover 3 million UK premises. The latest to enter the ring are investment firms iCon Infrastructure and Macquarie.

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) is reportedly in talks with Liberty Global (Virgin Media) about investing in their new Joint Venture company Liberty Fibre Limited, which looks set to compete with Openreach (BT) in rural areas by building its own open access Gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.
