A new report claims that the Goldman Sachs backed Cityfibre project, which is in the process of investing £2.5bn in order to rollout a 1Gbps FTTH broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises by the end of 2025 (here), could be looking to hoover up TalkTalk’s sibling wholesale FibreNation company.

Cable broadband ISP WightFibre appears to be ramping-up their £35m project to rollout a new Gigabit (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network on the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire), which aims to cover around 53,000 of the islands 61,000 homes by the end of 2021 (65,000 premises including businesses).

The FibreNation project, which was established by UK ISP TalkTalk and aspires to deploy a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 3 million premises, has today confirmed that the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury (population of 65,000) has been added to their initial rollout plan.

Not for the first time, customers of Vodafone’s fixed line broadband service (seemingly both FTTC and FTTH) seem to complaining about a significant drop in service speeds and a rise in packet loss during peak times over the past few days. The reports appear to echo the network congestion issues that plagued the ISP last year.

The FibreNation project, which was setup last year by budget ISP TalkTalk and aspires to rollout a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to 3 million UK premises, has today signed a “multi-million pound” partnership with civil engineering firm Makehappen Group to help support its “UK-wide” deployment.

Anybody lucky enough to be within reach of Hyperoptic’s Gigabit capable FTTP / FTTB broadband network, which at present covers about 500,000 UK premises across 39 UK “Hyper Cities“, will be pleased to know that they’re boosting both the download and upload speeds of their entry-level package.

The latest independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s £2.5bn project to rollout a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 5 million premises across 37 UK cities and towns by the end of 2025 (here) – supported by ISP partner Vodafone – has so now reached 70,748 premises (August 2019).

The Government’s seemingly unachievable new goal of blanketing the UK in Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband connectivity by the end of 2025 is expected to get a boost in the autumn, which is thanks to the long-awaited publication of its National Infrastructure Strategy (NIS) that is widely said to include a major funding boost.

The increasingly crowded market for “full fibre” focused UK alternative network (altnet) ISPs has grown again today as a new start-up called Swish Fibre enters the fray. The provider intends to rollout an “ultrafast broadband” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to underserved homes and businesses from 2020.

Alternative network ISP Ecom (Electronic Communities) appears to be making good progress on their rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire (England), which is now in the process of moving on toward Ledburn and aspires to cover 1,000 premises by the end of 2019.

David Henriques, a Senior Associate Economist at Ofcom and Visiting Fellow at the LSE, has appeared to suggest that menu regulation for fibre optic broadband networks may be a better approach for the United Kingdom to take than incentive orientated regulation.

The Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) council in South West Wales has revealed the outline of a new plan that aims to help spread the availability of ultrafast “full fibre” broadband connectivity across rural parts of the county, which among other things includes a £2m investment to boost existing voucher schemes and a LFFN bid.

Rural fixed wireless broadband ISP Voneus, which currently only covers around 4,500 UK premises with their 30-50Mbps capable network, has managed to secure a large investment from Macquarie Capital that could help their network to target 900,000 homes. Going forward they also intend to rollout full fibre (FTTP) services.

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

The Managing Director of UK ISP Exascale, Thomas Bibb, has today informed ISPreview.co.uk that the provider has begun to build their own Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network in Telford (Shropshire), which will initially (Phase One) aim to cover 1,200 homes and 250 businesses within as little as 6 weeks.
