The Government has today set out their future Digital Strategy for the United Kingdom, which aims to “create a world-leading digital economy” and “deliver world-class connectivity” but most of their broadband infrastructure commitments are re-announcements of existing policy.

The Chief Architect of Slovenian telecoms technology provider Iskratel, Simon Cimzar, has warned that DOCSIS based Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) networks (e.g. Virgin Media) need to “look past the latest cable upgrades” (DOCSIS 3.1) and go directly to Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P).

The UK Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) has told the Government that if they wish to boost the roll-out of ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP/H broadband networks then the “most important factor” will be to reduce the high costs and admin burden of existing regulatory barriers (wayleaves etc.).

Urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has taken a break from deploying “hyperfast” broadband to big apartment or office blocks in the major UK cities. Instead they’ve begun rolling out their Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network to a housing estate in Hertfordshire’s Welwyn Garden City.

BT has today published their latest quarterly results (Q4 2016 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base grow by +83k to total 9,276,000 subscribers (up from +76k added in Q3) and Openreach report that 7,177,000 now take an FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” service via their UK network.

A new report from Communications Chambers, which was funded by Deutsche Telekom, has suggested that tackling broadband needs by focusing on pure ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP/H) connectivity is “backward looking” and it might be better to foster a fibre fed 5G wireless future.
