Fans of accurate definitions may be pleased to note that the Advertising Standards Authority has finally agreed to review the often confusing way in which ISPs promote “fibre broadband” packages. This can be applied to both slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) and ultrafast full fibre optic (FTTH/P) services.

The United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has joined forces with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to formally support a new resolution at the United Nations that would require all countries in the world to adopt a single definition for “fibre optic broadband“.

Urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has signed a new supply agreement with Nottingham City Homes (NCH), which means that council residents at the Victoria Centre Flats and The Woodlands will soon be able to access ultrafast broadband via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

The price that ISPs and consumers pay for access to a 40Mbps FTTC superfast broadband line on Openreach’s (BT) network in the United Kingdom is set to fall after the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, launched a new review of the wholesale local access market. Quality of service standards will also be improved.

A Bristol-based startup called Optic Networks (UK) Ltd. has today floated their ambition to roll-out a new 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband network in the United Kingdom, which would aim to serve “large areas of tenanted and owned high rise multi dwelling units.”

The £700K publicly funded (loan) Aylesbury Vale Broadband project in rural Buckinghamshire has pulled out of their ultrafast FTTP/H roll-out in Great Brickhil after Gigaclear confirmed that they were about to start work. Meanwhile the two are set to go head-to-head in the village of Soulbury.

The Government has today set out their future Digital Strategy for the United Kingdom, which aims to “create a world-leading digital economy” and “deliver world-class connectivity” but most of their broadband infrastructure commitments are re-announcements of existing policy.

The community funded and built Fibre for Rural Nottinghamshire (F4RN) project, which has been inspired by B4RN and aims to cover the whole of rural Fiskerton and Morton with a 100Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, has completed its first roll-out phase and connected 83 customers.

A new survey of 3,000 Brits by urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has claimed that slow broadband speeds at peak-times (i.e. the busy evening period after work) are the top unexpected bugbear for people trying to move house, while flaky mobile signals and unresponsive landlords follow close behind.

The Chief Architect of Slovenian telecoms technology provider Iskratel, Simon Cimzar, has warned that DOCSIS based Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) networks (e.g. Virgin Media) need to “look past the latest cable upgrades” (DOCSIS 3.1) and go directly to Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P).

Last week we reported on the case of four men who had been found guilty of a £160m financing fraud that involved Total Asset Finance (TAF) and H2O Networks Ltd. (here), which was one of the UK’s early FTTH/P network pioneers. The men have now been sentenced to a total of 44 years in jail.

After years of waiting the Southwark Crown Court has found four men guilty of a £160 million financing fraud, which is a case that began in 2010/11 (here) after the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) opened an investigation into one of the UK’s early pioneers of alternative fibre optic broadband networks.
