Fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has raised £111 million in new equity funding to help achieve the current target of making their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) network available to 150,000 premises in UK rural areas by around 2020 (mostly in England).

Alternative fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has posted their final results to the end of 2016, which reveals that their “completed” cable duct and fibre optic network (FTTP) footprint has increased to 3,383km (up from 743km in 2015) and they now serve 3,962 customer premises (up from 1,200).

Utility infrastructure provider GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK) has announced that their ultrafast 300Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network, which is deployed for new build homes in the United Kingdom, has added a fifth ISP, Pure Broadband, to its open-access platform.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today set out their final plans for opening up Openreach’s (BT) national network of telegraph poles and underground cable ducts so that they can be used by rival ISPs in order to deploy ultrafast “full fibre” broadband (FTTH/P) services.

The FTTH Council Europe has revised downward last year’s Comsof estimate for the cost of deploying ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based broadband networks across the EU (currently this still includes the UK) by 2025, which makes it €137 billion (£116bn) instead of €156bn (£132bn).

Fans of accurate definitions may be pleased to note that the Advertising Standards Authority has finally agreed to review the often confusing way in which ISPs promote “fibre broadband” packages. This can be applied to both slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) and ultrafast full fibre optic (FTTH/P) services.

The £700K publicly funded (loan) Aylesbury Vale Broadband project in rural Buckinghamshire has pulled out of their ultrafast FTTP/H roll-out in Great Brickhil after Gigaclear confirmed that they were about to start work. Meanwhile the two are set to go head-to-head in the village of Soulbury.
