Audit Scotland Map R100 Contract LOTs

A new Freedom-of-Information (FoI) request has revealed that the Scottish Government‘s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across rural parts of the country (predominantly via FTTP), is now not expected to reach full completion until March 2028.

Broadband ISP and network builder Ogi, which is investing £200 million to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 150,000 premises in Wales by 2025, has today become the first internet provider in the UK to deploy Nokia’s 25G PON technology commercially.

Lincolnshire-based UK ISP LightSpeed Broadband, which is rolling out a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 200,000 premises across the East of England (rising to 1 million by the end of 2025), has appointed Jason Coward to be its new Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) as it continues with a shake-up of senior management.

Openreach (BT) has published a summary of their network traffic for 2022, which among other things reveals the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past year. For example, the busiest month in 2022 was actually January, when a total of 5,701PB (PetaBytes) passed over their network.

Broadband provider BT has issued an update on the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was “paused” in May 2022 (here) following complaints about service outages during power cuts etc. But the ISP now says this is “likely” to restart during the “spring of 2023“.

The UK Government’s Secretary of State for Business, Grant Shapps, has ordered investment company LetterOne (L1T FM Holdings UK) to sell its entire stake in alternative broadband network provider Upp (formerly Fibre Me) in order to “prevent, remedy, or mitigate the risk to national security“.

Rural ISP County Broadband, which aims to cover 500,000 premises across the East of England with their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network by the end of 2027, has appointed civil engineering firm Highway Workforce to help conduct their ongoing rollout across rural parts of Norfolk in England.

A new alternative network (altnet) builder called Meliora Networks Limited has emerged on to the scene with a plan to rollout a hybrid Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and gigabit-capable Full Fibre broadband network, which will focus on “areas of the UK that do not presently have access to next generation connectivity.”

Sources have indicated to ISPreview that broadband customers of UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) might face bigger price hikes in the future than usual, with the provider being tipped to adopt the same annual style of inflation busting RPI + 3.9% hikes as those of their mobile base (e.g. O2 sims).

London focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which now covers 720,000 UK premises with their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 675k in Oct 2022), has today confirmed that Macquarie Asset Management has provided £100 million of debt financing to help support the provider’s rollout.

You move into a new house and are told by your ISP that Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is available to the property, but soon after placing your order it becomes clear that some part of the network hasn’t been completed. Cue several months of waiting.

Fern Trading-backed broadband provider Giganet (Cuckoo) has revealed that they intend to open up their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is being rolled out across the South of England, to wholesale during 2023, so that other UK ISPs can sell services over it.

Broadband ISP Gigaclear has announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is being extended to serve around 2,200 homes and businesses in the rural Warwickshire (England) village of Harbury. In total, the provider is putting up to £7 million worth of commercial investment into the county.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk Business (TTB) has announced that they’ve formed a “strategic partnership” with alternative network provider Freedom Fibre, which is currently rolling out a new wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Ethernet network across parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Shropshire and North Wales.

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47%  last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

The Powys County Council in Wales has announced that their Digital Powys project, which is supported by the UK and Welsh government’s gigabit voucher schemes, will soon result in three community broadband schemes (Llanfan Fawr & Llanwrthwl, Aberedw & Glascwm, and Dwyriw & Manafon) deploying a new full fibre network.
