The Greater London Authority’s Strategic Investment Pot has awarded £800,000 to the Borough of Havering, which will be used to deploy a new ultrafast fibre optic network into the Rainham area. This could be used for improving connectivity to both public sector sites and businesses.

The Fastershire scheme in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire (England) has confirmed that they’ve sent Gigaclear’s revised Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband roll-out plan back to the drawing board. The move follows last year’s news (here), which revealed that the UK ISP’s contract had suffered “unexpected delays.”

Network builder Nextgenaccess, which recently secured £22m from the UK National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF) to help spread its 10Gbps fibre optic broadband to businesses in South Wales and South West England (here), has appointed the former CEO of ISP Gamma (Bob Falconer) to be its new Non-Executive Director.

Real estate company Strutt & Parker has suggested that UK farmers, many of which aren’t exactly swimming in lots of spare cash, should consider investing to build their own “private” broadband networks instead of waiting for whatever the Government’s 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) will deliver.

A new survey of 92 businesses in the UK county of Somerset, which was conducted by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce (SCC), has revealed that local firms are more concerned about issues around education and skills (56%) and digital infrastructure (52%) than the imminent arrival of Brexit (42%).

ISP B4B Networks, which until now has largely only focused upon catering for business premises in Northern Ireland, appears to have connected up its first residential apartment block to their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the city of Belfast. A number of broadband ISPs including TalkTalk, Hyperoptic, Cityfibre and Gigaclear, as well as the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), have written to the UK Government and Ofcom in the hope of encouraging tougher measures to prevent Openreach (BT) from hampering “full fibre” (FTTP) competition.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve introduced an exemption up to £2800 on the first Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) or Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband connection charge, when ordered following network provision via their new Full Fibre Infrastructure Build (FFIB) product.

A new report from the Broadband Stakeholders Group has warned that work to retire the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and replace it with all-IP voice services by c.2025 will face a number of challenges, particularly around ensuring resilient access to emergency services and encouraging user migrations.

Ofcom has today published their International Communications Market Report 2018 (ICMR), which broadly compares broadband and mobile networks in the United Kingdom with 17 other countries and the EU. Overall the UK does well for fixed line superfast broadband and 4G mobile, but we’re weak on “full fibre” (FTTP).

Ofcom has released their annual infrastructure report, which reveals that just 2% of the UK (677,000 premises) cannot access a 10Mbps capable fixed line broadband ISP service (down from 4% in 2017), while “full fibre” (FTTP) is available to 6% (up from 3%) and geographic coverage of 4G mobile has hit 66% (up from 43%).

Cityfibre has today confirmed that they’ve put in place a new debt financing package worth £1.12bn, which will support their wider £2.5bn roll-out (details) of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises across 37 UK cities and towns by the end of 2024.

New operator British Fibre Networks, which aspires to create an open access and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to serve over 35% of UK new build homes by 2020, has announced that they’ve so far signed up 24,000 new homes via 50 housing developers.

A new report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned that the UK Government must take “urgent action” and “fast track [new] laws” in order to ensure the delivery of its aspiration to achieve nationwide coverage of future 5G mobile by 2027 and “full fibre” (FTTP) Gigabit broadband ISP networks by 2033.
