Over the next few years the UK will witness a surge in alternative fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which means that investment and competition will vary a lot by geography. In response Ofcom has today begun consulting upon a new approach to how they set regulation and define such markets from 2021.

The Leader of the House and Chief Whip of the Welsh Government, Julie James AM, has this afternoon issued a statement on the progress of their state aid supported Superfast Cymru project with Openreach (BT). Sadly there’s still no word on when the contract for LOT 2 of their Phase 2 roll-out will be awarded.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has apologised after the councillor for Queensway in Wrexham (North Wales), Carrie Harper, accused their contractors of harassing six woman in Caia Park by using “sexually inappropriate behaviour” and swearing.

Urban focused “full fibre” broadband ISP Hyperoptic has announced that Charles Davies will be taking on the position of Managing Director for part of the business. Previously Dana Tobak held both the roles of MD (whole business) and she also remains the overall CEO. Charles forms part of a new executive team that reports to Dana.

The North Yorkshire County Council has pledged to launch an investigation into any cases where people struggle to achieve “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds, which is focused upon areas that have been upgraded by Openreach (BT) as part of the state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire project.

Openreach (BT) has announced that Swansea in Wales will be the next UK city to benefit from their “Fibre First” programme, which aims to roll-out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3 million homes and businesses by the end of 2020.

As predicted Ofcom has today proposed that BT and KCOM should be designated as the official Universal Service Providers (USP) for the Government’s new “legally binding” Universal Service Obligation (USO), which from 2020 will make it possible for those in slow speed areas to request a broadband speed of at least 10Mbps.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority has announced that it will bid for £12m of public funding from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) fund, which could be used to extend “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) ISP networks to connect “tens of thousands of local homes and businesses.”

Cityfibre has secured the £11.9m contract to build a new Gigabit (1Gbps+) capable “full fibre” broadband / Ethernet network in Suffolk (England), which will initially focus on connecting public sector sites across 10 towns before being expanded to reach local businesses and possibly homes. ISP MLL Telecom is also involved.

The Dorset County Council in England appears to have begun the process of seeking a supplier for the future Phase 4 contract of their Superfast Dorset project, which hopes to extend the coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks to an additional 4,000 to 20,000 homes and businesses.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that their 362Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and TV network is being expanded to cover 11,000 additional homes and businesses around the large County Antrim town of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.

The South Norfolk Council claims to have been successful in its ambition, which sought to be the first rural district in East Anglia to ensure that every home and business can order a broadband ISP connection with a minimum download speed of 10Mbps. But to get it you’ll have to sign-up with a wireless ISP.

Fibre optic broadband building Cityfibre has today joined forces with wireless infrastructure company Arqiva to construct the UK’s “largest” multi-million pound pilot of a new wholesale, 5G ready Small Cell infrastructure in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Mobile operators rejoice.

Ofcom has today launched a new consultation on their annual plan for 2019/20, which summarises all of the major work they intend to do next year (e.g. improving mobile coverage, new consumer protections, deciding which ISPs will deliver the 10Mbps USO for broadband and promoting investment in “fibre” networks etc.).

The President of the FTTH Council Europe, Ronan Kelly, has published a new open letter to EU telecoms ministers, which calls on them to stop “misleading fibre advertising” by UK and EU broadband ISPs that offer hybrid fibre services (e.g. FTTC); these are often significantly slower and less reliable than “full fibre” (FTTH).

The Scottish Borders Council has published a review examining the impact of the £8.4m in public investment that went into improving the local reach of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+). This finds that the Openreach (BT) roll-out “possibly” delivered value for money, but there were “major problems with the quality of the coverage.”

The incumbent ISP for Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire), KCOM, has moved to address consumer concerns by refreshing their fibre optic (FTTP/C) “Lightstream” broadband packages to offer more unlimited data options (as opposed to old fashioned capped allowances), cheaper prices and a new 900Mbps tier.
