The Superfast West Yorkshire project in England has confirmed that the new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT will result in even more premises being reached with “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) than originally planned and the first areas have also been named.

Fibre optic infrastructure developer Cityfibre has today moved forward with its plan to expand their pure fibre optic based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) / Ethernet network into the large towns of Milton Keynes and Northampton by signing up with two ISP partners in a deal worth £7 million.

The Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire project in England has confirmed that its first Broadband Delivery UK based contract has now completed, which means that 95% of local homes and businesses are now within reach of a superfast broadband (24Mbps+) service.

Telecoms giant BT has today announced a major expansion (“subject to regulatory certainty“) of their “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network, which will reach 2 million UK homes and businesses (up from around 200,000+ premises today) and complement their future roll-out of 500Mbps capable hybrid-fibre G.fast technology.

Industry sources have reportedly revealed that Cityfibre are working with BT (Openreach) to test a major deployment of Ofcom’s newly proposed Duct and Pole Access (DPA) solution, which could help ISPs to build alternative networks by giving them better access to BT’s cable ducts and poles.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently deploying a 1Gbps capable FTTP network to parts of 13 cities, has surveyed 3,000 UK residents and found that 11% of respondents would spend more for a property with 100Mbps broadband. Meanwhile 33% will try to delay their house move until the broadband is activated.
