Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) in Taiwan has this week officially begun the world’s first commercial deployment of next generation G.fast broadband technology, which is the same service that BT are currently trialling (here) for launch in the UK during 2016/17.

Deploying a new ultrafast (940Mbps capable) fibre optic broadband network in urban areas is never easy, as demonstrated by Cityfibre’s joint roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) service with Sky Broadband and TalkTalk in York where some areas could need corrective work.

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

After 20 months of waiting BT finally appears to be progressing its pledge to spend £50m on expanding the commercial roll-out of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P/B + FTTrN) services to 400,000 extra premises in UK cities, with the first to benefit being in London (Kensington, Chelsea and Tech City etc.).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project has revealed that a further £21m is to be spent on expanding superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises across the county. As a result discussions are now taking place with BT in order to “draw up contracts for the start of phase three“.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has signed a new 7-year and £5.6 million deal (including an option to extend to 19 years and grow in value to £16m) with Edinburgh City Council that will see the operator construct a new 100km long Gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network extension in the city.

The community driven Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which recently began work to roll-out a 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 580 premises in the rural Cumbria (England) villages of Garsdale and Dentdale, is trying to recover after unpaid contractors downed tools.

The Broadband Stakeholders Group, which advises the Government on broadband matters, has published a new report that aims to predict the future requirements of small UK businesses (SMEs). The conclusion finds that SMEs will see median downstream demand rise from 5Mbps in 2015 to just 8.1Mbps by 2025, but the overall picture is more complex.

A new survey of 3,000 Brits commissioned by Hyperoptic, which is deploying “hyperfast” (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband services around a number of UK cities, has claimed that people would spend 8% (+£14,000) more on a new home if it came with a 100Mbps+ connection.

UK ISP Gigaclear, which recently won the contract to ensure that 6,495 additional rural premises in Gloucestershire (England) are able to receive “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband by the end of 2017, has announced that Seven Springs in Cockleford will be the first to benefit.

As expected BT has confirmed that their first large-scale (2,000 premises) live customer trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer Internet speeds of up to 330Mbps (rising to 500Mbps in the future), have begun in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire).

The Fastershire project has today published a raw roll-out plan for the recently signed £10m deal with fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, which will ensure that 6,495 additional rural premises in Gloucestershire are able to receive “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband connectivity.
