A new survey of 3,975 UK people who had a contract for a home broadband ISP in December 2022 and January 2023, which was conducted by Which?, has found that 53% have experienced “connection issues” in the past year (e.g. very slow speeds, connection drop-outs etc.) and Sky Broadband were the worst offender.

The latest H2 2022 study into the broadband coverage of UK new build homes reveals that 98.3% of houses constructed by the end of 2022 were covered by a fixed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (unchanged from H1 2022), which falls slightly to 98.1% when only looking at the latest early data for 2023.

Network builder and broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which earlier this year revealed that their gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network had covered 1.15 million UK homes (inc. 275,000 customers), has today announced that they’re proposing to make around 110 redundancies (mostly build engineers) and refocus others to customer-facing roles.

The UK Labour Party’s Shadow Digital Minister, Stephanie Peacock MP, has this week given her support to full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic in its ongoing campaign to stop mid-contract price rises by rivals, which often increases consumer prices well above the current level of inflation (hikes of 13-15% hit many consumers earlier this year).

We’ve lost count now of how many times ISPreview has had to say this over the years, but there are still far too many broadband ISPs in the UK – particularly larger players – that fail to clearly inform their customers of how much their package will cost post-contract. As a result, consumers often feel misled when it comes time to re-contract.

Uswitch.com has unveiled the winners of their annual 2023 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw Plusnet named as the best LARGE broadband ISP of the year, while Hyperoptic took the same award for smaller providers. Meanwhile, BT was named as the most reliable broadband ISP and giffgaff came top for mobile.

Broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today confirmed that their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network now covers 1.15 million UK homes, which will need to almost double in order to hit their goal of 2 million by the end of 2023. The provider has also launched a TV campaign to criticise ISPs that adopt “misleading” mid-contract price hikes.

Under the agreement, Nokia will now also upgrade the provider’s IP core network with more flexibility and capacity.
